Comanche Lady Indians take regional championship

Sep. 22—COMANCHE — The Lady Indians softball team will advance to super-regionals next week after Comanche took the regional championship this week after beating out the Luther Lady Lions with a 13-3 run-rule victory Thursday and a 14-6 win Friday.

Thursday, Sept. 21

Comanche 13, Luther 3

Bre Gill and Jentry Whaley combined to drive in seven runs and Comanche rolled to a 13-3 run-rule victory over Luther in the first game of the regional tournament Thursday.

Third baseman Gill went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Whaley was also 2-for-4 but drove in three runs and scored twice.

That proved to be more run support than needed by Comanche pitcher Josey Harris, who earned the win after just three runs on six hits. Harris struck out four and walked one in five innings of work. She helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including one RBI and one run scored.

The Lady Indians garnered 12 hits. They jumped to the lead in the first inning after Gill's RBI single drove home a run. Jaylee Roebuck pushed across another first-inning run with an RBI-single, and Kamrey Rendon doubled to score two. Comanche led 4-1 after the first frame.

Whaley homered to center field in the second inning to give Comanche a 6-1 advantage.

The Lady Indians put the game away with a four-run fifth that featured an RBI-double by Whaley and a three-run homer by Gill.

Alayna Wiles took the loss for Luther. She allowed two runs on four hits through 1.1 innings. She didn't have any strikeouts and walked one.

Halyn Browning, Malia Virgil, and Kylie Long each drove in runs for Luther.

Friday, Sept. 22

Comanche 14, Luther 6

The Comanche Lady Indians repeated their success from Thursday against the Luther Lady Lions on Friday, taking the victory 14-6 to secure the regional championship and send them to super-regionals next week.

The Comanche Lady Indians took the lead in the top of the third on a single from Whaley, who scored one run ahead of Mckayla Slovak hitting a grand slam to left field.

In an attempt to hold the Lady Indians off, Luther's lineup scored five runs off of two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the Lady Indians at bay.

To answer Luther's rebuttal, the Comanche Lady Indians put up seven runs on seven hits in the top of the sixth. Gill led off the assault with a homer to centerfield that scored three runs. She was followed by Cloey Kinkade with a single. Two more runs scored. Raylee Chaney also singled, scoring a run, and finally Alayna Wiles made it possible for Whaley to hit into a field's choice and score one more point for the Lady Indians.

Rendon, the starting pitcher, earned the win for the Comanche Lady Indians in the circle. She gave up five hits and six runs, three of which were earned, over five innings, but struck out three and only walked one.

Kylie Long, with Luther, took the loss, going five innings to surrender seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits. Long struck out two and walked three.

Harris also pitched two innings for the Comanche Lady Indians in relief. Harris gave up zero hits, struck out two and walked none.

In total, Comanche garnered 16 hits in the game. Rendon and Chaney each had three hits between them. Slovak led the way with four runs batted in. In total, they went 1-for-5 on the day.

Kinkade, Harris and Whaley racked up multiple hits for Comanche. Chaney also stole two bases of the four stolen for the Lady Indians in the game. The lineup also had three double plays.
