Colts add QB Cam Ward in latest Draft Wire mock draft

As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for the 2022 regular season, the scouting department will begin digging through the seemingly endless list of prospects set for the 2023 NFL draft.

In a week’s time, the college football season will commence, which means the topic of whether the Colts will select a quarterback in the upcoming draft will begin to grow legs.

In Draft Wire’s latest 2023 mock draft, the Colts answered that question by selecting Washington State quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 20 overall pick.

The Colts spent the 2022 draft building around Matt Ryan, but next year, they should think about drafting his eventual successor. Ward looked like he was playing NCAA Football 14 on rookie mode at Incarnate Word, and if he can do anything similar in the Pac-12, he could easily end up warranting a first-round pick.

Ward transferred from the University of Incarnate Word, an FCS program in San Antonio, Texas. In two seasons, Ward completed 63.5% of his passes for 6,908 passing yards, 71 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. On the ground, he added 114 carries for 470 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

In the second round of this mock draft, the Colts selected Rutgers cornerback Avery Young, who enters his senior season after recording two interceptions and 18 passes defended during his career thus far.
