Colts add former third-round running back to practice squad, cut waiver claim

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts have added a running back with upside and NFL experience.

Indianapolis signed Trey Sermon to the practice squad on Tuesday, adding a former third-round pick who has played for both the 49ers and Eagles over the past two seasons.

The Colts also shuffled the offensive line, adding versatile veteran Arlington Hambright to the 53-man roster and releasing rookie tackle Ryan Hayes, a Dolphins seventh-round pick Indianapolis claimed off waivers after the NFL’s deadline to reduce rosters to 53 players on Aug. 30.

By promoting Hambright, Indianapolis adds arguably its most versatile lineman this season. Hambright spent the first two weeks of training camp playing left tackle, then shifted inside to play his natural position, guard, after the Colts added a few more players at tackle.

But the interesting move is bringing in Sermon, considering the team’s ongoing contract dispute with Jonathan Taylor and its lack of depth behind Zack Moss, who rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries in Sunday’s win over the Texans.

Moss played all but one offensive snap in Houston, a remarkably high workload for any running back, but understandable given the lack of production the Colts got from the position when Moss wasn’t quite ready for the season opener.

Indianapolis backs picked up just 25 yards on 16 carries in that game, led by Deon Jackson’s 13 carries for 14 yards and two fumbles. Rookie Evan Hull suffered a knee injury that placed him on injured reserve, although he could return this season. With Hull unavailable, no other Colts running back took an offensive snap against Houston.

Sermon adds another option.

The former Ohio State star carried 41 times for 167 yards as a rookie with San Francisco in 2021, then carried twice for 19 yards with Philadelphia last season, and he’s also played special teams in the NFL before, but he’ll have to get into the Colts practices and work his way up the depth chart to get a chance in Indianapolis, considering that Taylor’s return looms after the next two games.

Sermon spent training camp with the Eagles this season, scoring a touchdown against the Colts in the preseason game between the two teams.
