COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Young, Racers continue hot streak

Jan. 10—Oakwood native Katelyn Young and the Murray State women's basketball team continue to roll on a major hot streak.

The Racers have won their last nine games and continued that as Missouri Valley Conference season has started rolling as well.

Murray State beat Bradley 99-52 on Jan. 4 as Young had 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Young would have seven points with seven rebounds on Saturday as the Racers beat Illinois State 90-55.

The Racers are 10-2 and 3-0 in the MVC and will face Indiana State today.

Schlarman Academy grad Anaya Peoples and the DePaul women's team are going through struggles in the Big East.

The Blue Demons lost their third in a row on Saturday in a 75-68 loss to No. 21 Creighton. Peoples had 10 points with eight rebounds, five assists and steals for DePaul, who is 9-8 and 1-3 in the Big East and will face another ranked team on Saturday in No. 23 Marquette.

Another Schlarman grad — Capria Brown — and the Central Michigan women's basketball team is also having a slow start in the MAC.

The Chippewas lost 77-69 to Buffalo on Saturday as Brown had two points and four rebounds.

In Wednesday's game against Akron, Brown had five points, but Central Michigan lost 70-62 as the Chippewas dropped to 1-11 and 0-3 in the MAC.

Central Michigan will take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin grad Emily Meidel and the Eastern Illinois women's basketball team got to a two-game winning streak with a 72-70 win over UT-Martin on Jan. 4, but lost 53-49 to Little Rock on Saturday.

Meidel had two points and three rebounds for the Panthers against UT-Martin and had an assist against Little Rock.

The Panthers are 5-11 and will play Morehead State today.

Danville native Tevin Smith and the Cleveland State men's basketball team had won four straight games before losing to Wright State 82-70 on Jan. 4.

Smith had seven points, with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game.

The Vikings would rebound on Sunday with a 88-85 overtime win over Northern Kentucky as Smith had 11 points with seven rebounds and two blocks.

Cleveland State is 11-6 and will face Milwaukee on Friday.

Danville native Sean Houpt is still trying to fight his way back to form for the William & Mary men's basketball team.

Houpt had three points on Jan. 4 as the Tribe beat Elon 77-70 and had three points, two rebounds and a block on Saturday in a 77-55 loss to Drexel.

The Tribe are 6-9 and will face Hampton today.

The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team, who is coached by Danville native Stan Gouard, lost to Tennessee Tech on Saturday by a73-59 score.

The Screaming Eagles are 5-12 and will face SIU-Edwardsville today.
