College roundup: JCC women top Onondaga for 14th straight; assistant coach Clark dies

Feb. 8—WATERTOWN — LaKaiya Butcher struck for 30 points to anchor Jefferson Community College's 94-80 victory over Onondaga Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference showdown Wednesday that extended the Cannoneers' winning streak to 14 games.

Kori Nichols followed with 17, Abby Raven scored 14 and Daelynn Alcock added 13 for JCC (18-1 overall, 9-1 conference).

Kate Grainger scored 22 for Onondaga (19-2, 10-1), Cianna Papineau finished with 16 and Avianna Baker added 15.

JCC MOURNS CLARK

Jefferson CC women's basketball assistant Clint Clark died Wednesday, the school announced. He was 56.

Clark, who was in his second season as the team's assistant, died from cancer and was under hospice care.

Clark, from Adams Center, also served as an assistant for the JCC men's team.

Clark had worked as a basketball coach for the past 20-plus years. Prior to JCC, he was the Belleville Henderson junior varsity boys basketball coach. From 2009-18 he served as assistant girls basketball coach at South Jefferson. He was also an assistant coach for the South Jefferson boys team from 2004-09. Prior to that he led the Belleville Henderson JV boys team.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

JEFFERSON CC 93, ONONDAGA CC 80

Shamell Ponds scored 19 points and totaled eight rebounds and seven assists and Machi Plummer recorded a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds and also tallied seven assists as Jefferson CC defeated Onondaga CC in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game in Watertown.

Owen Coall came off the bench to score 15 points for the Cannoneers (9-11, 8-5), and Kristan Lewis added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

LaMar Matthews scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Lazers (4-17, 1-12), Zach Chamberlain contributed 12 points and Alex Pagan chipped in with 10 points.
