College roundup: Clarkson records consecutive shutouts to open women's hockey season

Sep. 24—POTSDAM — The Clarkson women's hockey team finished its season-opening weekend with yet another clean slate.

Sophomore goaltender Julia Minotti made 14 saves to her first career shutout as the Golden Knights blanked Merrimack, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in a nonconference game at Cheel Arena.

On Saturday, senior goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk made 15 saves to record the shutout for Clarkson, which downed Merrimack, 5-0, in its season opener.

In Sunday's game, Dominique Petrie assisted on each goal for the Golden Knights, who entered the season ranked No. 9 in the nation. Keira Hurry, Rebecca Morissette, and Haley Winn scored a goal each for Clarkson.

Nicole Gosling scored two goals and assisted on another to pace Clarkson to the win on Saturday.

Sena Catterall contributed a goal and an assist and Laurence Frenette and Anne Cherkowski chipped in with a goal each.

Haley Winn recorded a pair of assists for the Golden Knights, who scored twice within the first 10 1/2 minutes of the game on a goal each from Catterall and Gosling.

Goalie Calli Hogarth made 28 saves and then 18 more on Sunday to pace Merrimack (0-2).

COLGATE 4, ST. LAWRENCE 1

Kaitlyn O'Donohoe scored a goal and assisted on another and Danielle Serdachny and Allyson Simpson each recorded a pair of assists as the Raiders topped the Saints in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena on Saturday.

Kennedy Wilson scored a goal for St. Lawrence and goalie Emma-Sofie Nordström made 27 saves.

FOOTBALL

ST. LAWRENCE 28, VERMONT-CASTLETON 0

Junior quarterback Will Lederman scored four touchdowns to spark the Saints to a home victory over the Spartans in a nonconference game at Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium.

Lederman completed 20 of 31 passes for a career-high 227 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two touchdowns, leading St. Lawrence's ground game with 48 yards on 14 attempts.

Lederman opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown pass to Cole Salyards in the first quarter.

St. Lawrence (2-2) went on to score three unanswered points in the second quarter as Matt Kowalski hauled in a 15-yard scoring reception from Lederman, who later scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 10 yards, with his final touchdown coming with 18 seconds remaining in the first half.

On the defensive end, Joseph O'Neil led the Saints with seven tackles, while Ryan Watson recorded four tackles and two sacks for the loss of nine yards.

Devin Wollner rushed for 44 yards to lead Castleton (2-2).

MEN'S SOCCER

ST. LAWRENCE 1, RPI 0

Fifth-year goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger made five saves to record the shutout as the Saints blanked the Engineers in a Liberty League game in Canton on Saturday.

Michael McDougald scored a goal in the first half for St. Lawrence (3-2-2, 1-0) against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (3-2-2, 0-1).

CLARKSON 2, RIT 1

Nolan Grady and Kai Endo each scored in the first half, with Endo converting on a penalty kick, and the Golden Knights went on to edge the Tigers to win their Liberty League opener in Rochester.

Goalie Josh Morelli only needed to make one save to record the win for Clarkson (5-1-0, 1-0) against Rochester Institute of Technology (2-1-3, 0-1).

SUNY CANTON 2, SUNY DELHI 2

Martin Torales and Michael Gavette each scored a goal as the Kangaroos (2-5-1, 0-1-1) forged a tie with the Broncos (3-2-3, 0-1-1) in an NAC game in Delhi.

SUNY OSWEGO 1, SUNY POTSDAM 0

Kyle Hanner scored a goal in the first half to spark the Lakers (2-2-3, 1-0) to a SUNYAC victory over the Bears in Oswego.

Goalie Lucas Schiel made four saves for SUNY Potsdam (3-3-1, 0-2).

On Sunday, Onondaga Community College (6-1-1, 3-0) defeated Jefferson Community College (4-4, 2-2), 3-1, in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game in Syracuse.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

ST. LAWRENCE 0, RPI 0

Goalkeeper Keely Snode made seven saves to record her third straight shutout as the Saints (2-1-3, 1-0-1) forged a tie with the Engineers in a Liberty League game in Troy.

Megan Wampner made three stops for RPI (4-0-3, 0-0-1).

RIT 1, CLARKSON 0

Jessie Gomez scored the game's lone goal in the 90th minute as the Tigers edged the Golden Knights in a Liberty League game in Potsdam.

Emily Sanchez made five saves to record the shutout for RIT (3-4-1, 1-0-1) and Ava Pushor finished with five saves for Clarkson (6-1-2, 1-1-0).

SUNY POTSDAM 0, SUNY OSWEGO 0

Goalie Savannah Bowie made 13 saves as the Bears (2-3-2, 0-1-2) recorded a draw with the Lakers (3-1-3, 0-0-1) in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

SUNY DELHI 1, SUNY CANTON 0

Shaniyah Myers scored in the 87th minute as the Broncos (5-1-0, 2-0) edged the Kangaroos in an NAC game in Delhi.

Goalie Skylar Williams made 19 saves for SUNY Canton (0-6-1, 0-2).

ONONDAGA CC 2, JEFFERSON CC 1

Beaver River graduate Brenna Mast scored an unassisted goal in the first half to spark the Lazers (7-1, 3-0) past the Cannoneers (5-2, 2-1) in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game in Syracuse.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

CLARKSON 3, BARD 0

Sara Galante totaled nine kills, five aces, and 12 digs to pace the Golden Knights in a sweep of the Raptors in a Liberty League match in Potsdam.

Olivia Freer contributed eight kills for Clarkson (7-4, 2-0), which won the match, 25-15, 25-9 and 25-12.

Also for the Golden Knights, Tess Sorel (6-1-10) hit .500 in the match, Anna Mayer and Isabelle Crow split setting duties with 16 and 15 assists, respectively, and Abigail Spector notched 17 digs.

UNION 3, ST. LAWRENCE 0

The Saints were swept by the Garnet Chargers (7-6, 1-1) in a Liberty League match in Canton, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-22.

Vivian Zymeck recorded a team-high four blocks and added 12 digs and 13 kills, Vanessa Latam tallied 13 digs and Araiza Acum-Santos totaled 14 kills for St. Lawrence (4-7, 1-1).

SUNY POTSDAM SPLITS PAIR

The Bears won their first match of the day against SUNY Cobleskill, 18-25, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-20 in nonconference play in Elmira.

SUNY Potsdam (4-7) was then beaten in its finale by host Elmira, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17 and 25-19,

In the opening match, Alyssa Adams led the Bears with a career-high 21 kills for the Bears, Megan Henry tallied a career-high 13 kills along with 10 digs and one ace.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

SAINTS WIN HOFFMANN INVY

Michael Skutt (25:26.4) and Nick Lyndaker (25:40.7) finished second and third, respectively, as St. Lawrence University won the team championship over the 6K course at the Hoffmann Invitational in Canton.

Andre Alle-Lamarche of the University of Ottawa took first place in the event, running a 25:17.2.

Drew Reigelsperger (27:32) finished in 19th place and Tyler Nickels (27:39) took 20th place to pace Clarkson to a fourth-place finish.

Lance Bradley (32:05) finished 52nd overall to pace SUNY Canton to a fifth-place finish.

Eli Siracusa (30:54.1) finished in 47th place to lead SUNY Potsdam to a sixth-place showing.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

SAINTS CAPTURE HOFFMANN INVY

Alli Sibold secured first place in 21:53.2 to pace St. Lawrence to the team championship at the Hoffmann Invitational in Canton.

Teammates Emma Palumbo (23:07.5) and Charlotte Blake (24.09.7) finished third and fourth overall, respectively, for the Saints.

Skylar Francis (27:59.3) finished 24th place to guide Clarkson to a third-place finish.

Lydia Snow (27:18) finished 22nd overall to pace SUNY Canton, while Emily Yousey (28:04.1) finished in 25th to lead SUNY Potsdam.
