College Roundup: Adrian women's basketball begins MIAA play 2-0

The Adrian College women's basketball team has started MIAA play strong, going 2-0 to open league play with a 71-62 win at home Wednesday against Kalamazoo before winning 63-51 at Alma on Saturday.

Julia Tierman had a strong night Wednesday, going for a game-high 20 points while adding four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Close behind was Bailey Taylor with 18 points, three assists, two rebounds and a block and steal.

Kylie Skidmore added 12 points, five assists, five rebounds and a steal. Kiaya Warner and nine assists to go with five points, four steals and three rebounds. The Bulldogs had 22 assists to only 10 turnovers on the night.

Adrian led 16-13 after the first and 35-30 at the half before taking a 54-44 lead into the fourth.

Against the Scots, Ashlyn Weatherly posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with two blocks and a steal. Warner had 14 points as well and added a steal and assist while Skidmore posted 11 points, five assists, five rebounds and a steal.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 2-0 MIAA) were tied 13-13 with Alma after the first before taking a 29-27 lead at the half. Adrian continued to stretch the lead in the second half, outscoring the Scots 34-24.

Men's Hockey

The Bulldogs rolled against Concordia Wisconsin at home, scoring 31 seconds into the game and not looking back in an 8-0 win.

Zachary Heintz had three goals and two assists while Jaden Shields scored twice. Mathew Rehding had a goal and three assists while Jacob Suede had a goal and two assists and Ben Loreto scored as well.

Bradley Somers had five assists while Cameron Babiak and Ayodele Adeniye had an assist.

Dershahn Stewart made 10 saves while Jackson Bernard finished the game with eight.

Adrian followed it up with a 6-2 win on Saturday to move to 8-2-1 and 7-1 in the NCHA.

Heintz continued his strong week in which he eclipsed 100 career points with two goals and two assists while Bradley had two more assists and a goal. Rehding had a goal and assist while Ian Amsbaugh and Ryan Pitoscia each had a goal.

Shields and Alec Lovisek each had two assists while Will Bowman, Connor May and Matt Cuoto each had an assist while Nolan Suggs made 25 saves in net.

Women's Hockey

The Bulldogs had their six-game winning streak snapped Thursday as they fell 7-5 at Wisconsin-River Falls.

No. 8 Adrian (7-2) and the No. 3 Falcons exchanged the first two goals with Courtney Ben tying the game up 1-1 at the 12:01 mark. River Falls scored the next four goals and led 6-2 going into the third with Karmen Anderson netting a goal in the second.

The Bulldogs made a furious comeback, pulling within a goal at 6-5 with Une Bjelland scoring twice and Tia Lascelle scoring as well, but they were unable to complete the comeback. The Falcons added an empty netter with 16 seconds left.

Zoe Lohrei had two assists while Jocelin Hudanish, Bjelland, Callie Wollschlanger, Kathryn Truban and Maya Roy all had an assist.

After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs rolled on Saturday against Wisconsin-Concordia 9-1.

Bjelland had four goals and two assists while Lohrei had a goal and three assists and Callie Wollschlager had a goal and an assist. Lindsey Sorrell, Hudanish and Gia Avalone all had a goal.

Anderson had three assists while Annika Hanson had two and Lascelle and Truban had one.

Vanessa Ruban made 17 saves in the win.

Adrian wrapped up the busy weekend in Wisconsin with a 4-0 win against Concordia on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (9-2, 6-0 NCHA) were led Saturday with Bjelland and Hanson each scoring once and assisting once. Hudanish and Roy each scored as well while Anderson, Lohrei, Kaleigh Cadorette, Aileena Dopheide and Nicole Pietrucha all had an assist.

Michaela O'Brien had 28 saves in the shutout.

Men's Wrestling

The Bulldogs took fifth at the Ohio Northern Invite led by a second place from Tanner Smith.

Smith went 4-1 at 141 pounds with two pins and a tech fall before getting a sudden victory in the semifinal and then falling 6-2 in the championship.

Men's Basketball

The Bulldogs traveled to take on Division II Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday, falling 91-38.

Nick Seifert had 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two assists to lead Adrian.

Siena Heights

Women's Basketball

The Saints rolled to their sixth-straight win, blowing out Northwestern Ohio 61-29 on Wednesday in WHAC play to go to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.

SHU led 32-15 at the half and held UNOH to under five points in the first and fourth quarters.

Madison Vice had a game-high 12 points off the bench for the Saints to go with three assists and two rebounds. Kayla Hinton had 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals while Jakarri Alven had 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.

SHU rolled Saturday at Cleary 87-37 with a 50-17 lead at the half.

The Saints (6-2, 3-1 WHAC) were led by Jillian Gelso's 15 points while E'Anna Won had 14 points, four steals, a block and an assist.

Men's Basketball

The Saints picked up their first WHAC win of the season against Northwestern Ohio, 86-70, behind a strong second-half turnaround.

SHU trailed 42-31 at the half, but raced by the Racers in the second half, outscoring them 55-28.

Colin Nutter had a double-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a block, steal and assist. Delano Williams had 15 points, four rebounds and an assist while Brent Wiles had 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

The Saints held on without scoring in the final 1:42 of the game against Cleary to pick up a third-straight win, 55-54, to go to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC.

Jonas Tester hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 left to take a 55-52 lead with Cleary answering with a layup with 1:16 left. That's where the scoring ended.

Cleary missed a free throw with four seconds left to close out the game.

Jonny Bowers had 18 points, nine rebounds, a block and assist while Tester had 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Women's Wrestling

The Saints had a solid weekend at the Patriot Duals at Cumberland, going 4-3 overall.

SHU defeated Brewton Parker (29-20), Liberty (35-8) and Montreat (38-4) in pool play before getting a bracket win against Cumberlands (25-20). The Saints fell to Campbellsville (40-8), Mount Olive (38-11) and Indiana Tech (44-4).

Bo Geibe went 7-0 with four tech falls, two pins and a void.

Men's Wrestling

The Saints traveled to the Blithe Duals where they went 2-3 with wins against Muskegon Community College (46-8) and Wheaton (30-20) while falling to Midway (43-10), Cornerstone (29-15) and Albion (42-7).

Alejandro Castro went 4-1 with two major decisions, a pin and a void at 157.

SHU also sent a group to the Hawks Open at Henry Ford where Braden Gariety took third at 157 by going 5-1 with three pins and a medical decision along with a 4-1 decision in the consolation final.

Track and Field

The Saints took part in the SVSU Holiday Open where Emma Valentine had the top women's placement as she took second in the high jump at 1.67-meters while the men were led by Noah Cunningham taking fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.13.
