Coldwater volleyball falls to Harper Creek on Senior Night

COLDWATER – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity volleyball team dropped a tough Interstate 8 conference battle with Harper Creek Wednesday night, falling by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-23 on Senior Night.

“Coming in to tonight we were missing a key player in Mya (Porter) who is out sick and despite that the girls really stepped up tonight,” said Coldwater head coach Kesley Closson. “Tonight could have gone a few different ways and I think we did a great job of not freaking out when a new lineup was put out there. The girls worked cohesively on the floor, they made great adjustments, and we were right there with Harper Creek in most of these games. I am proud of the girls for what they were able to do tonight, and I told them we may get another shot or two at Harper Creek in the final weeks of the year. I know that when we have our full lineup, we will be able to get it done.”

Coldwater took the night to celebrate their six seniors in Emma Porter, Cece Velazquez, Morgan Dancer, Bella Carrion, Jaelah Sloan, and Mackenzie Scheid.

“Having six seniors out of 11 girls is so big, most of these girls have been in our program since they were very little,” said Closson. “They are a big reason why our program is where it is. I was looking through pictures the other day and I have photos of some of the girls from way back in our youth camps, it is just so amazing to see where they are now. They have left their stamp here and on this program.”

On the court it was those seniors who made the biggest impact, led by Scheid who blasted out 17 huge kills to go along with three aces, 12 digs and one block.

The duo of Carrion and Sloan also had big nights, with Carrion recording five kills, two aces, and one block while Sloan added six kills, one assist, three digs and one block.

Setter Elli Foley continued her solid all-around play at the quarterback spot of the offense, notching 29 assists, eight digs, one block, and three kills.

Also adding to the Cardinal effort was Ava Longstreet who had four kills, three digs, and two blocks; Cece Valezquez with one dig and one block; Emma Porter with seven digs; Maren DeBeau with eight digs, two assists, and one ace; and Morgan Dancer with six digs.

Coldwater will see action again next Wednesday when they travel to Parma Western for more Interstate 8 action, followed by a weekend trip to Harper Creek for the Interstate 8 conference tournament.

“As I said earlier, we should get another chance at Harper Creek at the conference tournament or even at Districts,” added Closson. “There’s a lot of things that need to go right for us to see them again, but we have plenty of chances to watch them play and I am excited about that, and I think our seniors our to. With our lineup I really think we have a good chance against them, I really believe in this team.”
