Cleveland Browns unveil new dawg logo with nods to city, team

The Cleveland Browns have added a new logo, and it has that dawg in it.

The new logo, dubbed the dawg logo, was voted on by fans to be the new designed added to the team's plethora of logos. After voting to determine five finalists, two remained in the hunt, with the winner announced Monday.

"Our fans have been asking us for a new dawg logo for quite some time, so it made perfect sense for them to select the logo themselves and decide how they want our team to be represented − and they made a great choice," Browns executive vice president and partner JW Johnson said in a statement.

What's unique about the new Browns dawg logo?

The new logo was created by designer Houston Mark, which he submitted for the competition in April. He said the logo is designed around a bullmastiff dog after the breed was selected in a contest as the breed that best represents the team. Within the logo are several symbols related to the team, city and state.

"There was a lot of stuff in there I wanted to incorporate because there's so much history to Browns fandom in particular. It was really important for me to honor and respect the history of the fanbase, the championships and the pride that comes with being a fan," Mark said. "The fact that Browns fans felt represented by the logo was by far the most gratifying thing about this entire project."

Here are all the references in the new logo:

  • Ohio: In the top left corner, the bullmastiff's right ear is in a shape of Ohio, the team's home state.

  • Football: The nose of the bullmastiff is in the shape of a football.

  • East end zone: The bullmastiff's tag has an outline Cleveland Municipal Stadium, the first home of the Browns, and the where the original "Dawg Pound" section was in the east end zone.

  • Guitar Pick: The center of the dog tag is a guitar pick in reference to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

  • Spikes: The dog collar has eight spikes as a nod to the team's eight total championships.

  • Guardian Bridge: In between the dog's jowls is the shape of the Cleveland's Hope Memorial Bridge "fortifying the bond between fans, team and city."

  • Pound Helmet: As a nod to the original "Dawg Pound," a maskless helmet worn by fans in in the top right.

  • Helmet Stripe: On the dog's forehead is a center stripe in reference to the team's helmets.

Browns logos

Despite wearing plain orange helmets with a center stripe, Cleveland has several logos it dons. In addition to its main orange helmet logo, as well as wordmark, the team has two Brownie the Elf logos, one of which was the midfield logo last season.
