Haack, who is in his seventh NFL season, definitely fits the moniker of NFL journeyman.

He began his pro football career by signing as an undrafted free agent in 2017 with the Miami Dolphins, where he appeared in 64 games from 2017-20.

From there, he played 17 games for the Buffalo Bills in 2021 and 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022.

The Arizona State University product found himself back in the desert, which he's called "a second home," when he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals earlier this year, but he never appeared in a game for the Cards.

Now, he's aiming to make an impact as a punting fill-in for the Browns.

How do you pronounce Matt Haack's name?

According to the Dolphins media guide and Bills PR, Haack's name — unlike what the spelling might suggest — is pronounced "Hawk" like the bird of prey.

Matt Haack became known as an 'accidental' punter

Though Haack can now be considered a veteran NFL punter, there was a time where punting wasn’t even on his sporting radar.

According to an article by Zach Gershman of azcardinals.com, Haack played all over the field while in high school — route running as a wide receiver, playing in the backfield as a running back and even filling in at quarterback during wildcat packages.

As Gershman writes, “Haack was catching some punts (during a high school practice) and grew tired of throwing the ball back to the kid doing the kicking. Instead of tossing it, he booted it.”

Coaches were so impressed by his natural abilities as a punter that the position stuck.

“I would just say it was probably the best decision (I) ever made,” Haack said, per Gershman.

Haack landed at his current position by accident, but that accident helped him carve out a meaningful NFL career.

During that career, entering his time with the Browns, Haack's played in 98 games, punting 429 times for an average of 44.5 yards per punt, with 160 of those being pinned inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
