Christoval girls cross-country takes first at district, results from area district meets

The Christoval girls cross country team took first place in the District 7-2A cross country meet on Oct. 11 one year after placing third at state.

Presley Polk, Kenadee Millican and Savannah Wood took the top three spots in the meet and finished the two-mile course in under 13 minutes.

"Our goal is to get all seven runners within 45 seconds of each other," coach Melissa Pump said. "I preach that the more that we pack together, and the tighter we are, then you're unstoppable at that point because the less gaps we have, the less people can try to break your group up."

While the Lady Cougars did not quite meet their goal of having all seven runners within 45 seconds of each other, all of the runners stayed within two minutes of each other and six of them finished in the top 10.

Last year, Madyson George and Wood finished 16th and 17th at state, respectively, and were the highest finishers for the Cougars. But for Plump, it is all about how the group finishes.

"I don't think even once this season we've talked about only individuals going," Pump said. "The only thing that we've ever preached and really thought about is that we need to close the gap and fill in, where if someone is having a rough day, then someone else can fill in."

The Lady Cougars and other Region I Class 2A-6A teams and individuals who qualified for the region meet will compete in Lubbock at Mae Simmons Park on Oct. 24 for a chance to go to state. The Region IV meet is held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on the same day.

The Region II-A meet will be held in San Angelo at the Angelo State Intermural fields on Oct. 24.

Here are the results from the district meets across the Standard-Times coverage area.
