Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, LB Nick Bolton share thoughts on new WR Kadarius Toney

Kadarius Toney is expected to make his debut with the Kansas City Chiefs on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 9. After spending just over a week with his new team, Toney has managed to do enough in practice to convince the coaching staff and his new teammates that he’s ready for action.

Speaking to media members on Friday, Chiefs LB Nick Bolton recalled a vivid memory of the two players matching up in college. Bolton, of course, played for the University of Missouri. Toney played for the University of Florida. Bolton believes that one of the worst plays of his career came against Toney in 2021.

“He’s an electric player, very slippery out there in space,” Bolton said of Toney. “What he can do with the ball after the catch is special. I think he had like one play that I vividly remember from Florida. It’s one of the worst plays that I probably had – I wish I had back in college. He had caught a little screen pass (and) made a couple of guys miss – five or six of us – (and) scored a touchdown. So, I knew then he was electric. We knew going into the game he was electric as well; he was one of the most dynamic receivers in college coming out in my class.”

After spending some time with him on the practice field, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce was complimentary of Toney’s ability. It’s clear the veteran thinks that the newcomer will help this team win games, both in the interim and down the line.

“He brings energy,” Kelce explained. “I think his ability speaks for itself. He’s very quick, can put his foot in the ground with the best of them. And he’s special with the ball in his hands. He’s one of those guys where his awareness is crazy. You think he’s got eyes in the back of his head because he sees guys coming from different angles and stuff. (I) haven’t seen the full arsenal that is him yet, but I think he’s definitely going to help us out in the near future – definitely in the long run, for sure.”

It’s not quite clear what Toney’s role will look like against the Titans. Perhaps we’ll see Kansas City dial up a play to get Toney the ball out in space so he can show off his awareness, quickness and ability after the catch.
