Chiefs had interest in Calais Campbell prior to his return to Ravens

The Kansas City Chiefs were interested in kicking the tires on a veteran pass-rusher before he returned to his old team.

Calais Campbell is back with the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year deal. According to NFL reporter Josina Anderson, the Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns were among the teams who were interested in signing Campbell. The Ravens, however, were the team that showed the most urgency in getting a deal done.

It’s no surprise that the Chiefs had an interest in Campbell. Yes, the team has a huge need to get better along the defensive line, but they also hired defensive line coach Joe Cullen this offseason. Cullen coached Campbell as the defensive line coach with the Ravens in 2020.

Ultimately, it’s good to see the Chiefs doing their homework on free agent defensive linemen. There won’t be many tears shed on missing out on a pass-rusher who is set to be 36 years old at the start of the season. Last year in Baltimore, he had just 1.5 sacks, five tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits in 15 games played.

It’s also unlikely that Kansas City would have been willing to give him a two-year deal like the one he received from Baltimore. It makes much more sense from his perspective to land back with his team of the past two seasons.
