Chiefs' big offseason thing: Protect Patrick Mahomes

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz looks at the one big thing for Kansas City's offseason - how the Chiefs might shore up some 'weaknesses' at wide receiver and offensive line to keep Patrick Mahomes operating at his usual, otherworldly self.

JASON FITZ: It's time take a look at one big thing for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. Now, I guess I could make this Cris Jones. What are they going to do? L'Jarius Sneed also, they're probably going to franchise Sneed. Maybe Jones goes out and tests the open market. Maybe he goes away. How do they replace them? Sure, that's a fair and reasonable conversation.

I would argue the one big thing the Chiefs need is bubble wrap for Patrick Mahomes. Think about what we saw this year. This was a version of the Chiefs that was supposed to be beatable. They didn't really have a number one wide receiver for much of the year. He grew into that with Rashee Rice. They didn't have one for much of the year.

Their offensive line was OK. This is a team that, throughout the course of the year, got better at running the football, but that wasn't a strength early on. Middle of the year, there were national media people telling you that Travis Kelce looked old and should hang it up, and that Mahomes wasn't going to be able to will this version to a Super Bowl. But that's exactly what he did.

Because through it all, Mahomes finds a way to make plays. And this defense, coordinated by Steve Spagnuolo, is absolutely incredible. So yeah, maybe they're going to lose one of their defensive stars. Maybe that has some impact. Or, maybe their coordinators in their front office are going to continue to find talent, develop talent, and be able to plug that talent in. And on the offensive side of the ball, their weaknesses at offensive line and wide receiver, well, those happen to be two of the strongest position groups in this year's NFL Draft.

So the big question facing the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason is, are they going to get three in a row? And right now, you can't give me a reasonable reason why the answer to that is no because every reasonable reason you gave me on why they won't repeat? They proved wrong.

So if you ask me right now, the only real big question that the Chiefs are facing is how much they're going to celebrate New Orleans after they win another Super Bowl.
