Chelsea vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk headed the winner deep into extra time as Jurgen Klopp's massively-depleted side beat Chelsea 1-0 to claim a record-extending 10th Carabao Cup.

The Dutch defender, who controversially had another header ruled out at the same end in the second half after VAR intervention, rose above Mykhailo Mudryk to nod in Kostas Tsimikas' corner in the 118th minute. It was no more than the Netherlands international, lifting his first trophy as Liverpool captain, deserved after a monumental performance in defence in a win which seemed against the odds for long periods.

Klopp became the third Liverpool manager to win the trophy more than once as his long goodbye to his departure at the end of the season began with the first of a potential four pieces of silverware. But for opposite number Mauricio Pochettino his long wait for an English domestic trophy continues, as he was forced to reflect on how the Carabao Cup final slipped away from his side.

There is no shame in losing to Liverpool, but Chelsea know they blew a major chance on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will have watched on increasingly expectant as a tired-looking Liverpool looked there for the taking.

But the Blues left Wembley Stadium empty-handed after a hugely frustrating 1-0 loss.

Pochettino responds to Neville

19:24 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino has said Gary Neville's description of Chelsea as "blue billion-pound bottlejobs" was "not fair".

Liverpool finished the game with a host of youngsters on the pitch after Jayden Danns, 18, James McConnell and Bobby Clark, both 19, and Jarell Quansah, 21, came off the bench to join 20-year-old starter Harvey Elliott.

The average age of the Chelsea side was still younger, but the Blues have spent over £1billion on new players under their current ownership.

"In extra-time, it's been Klopp's kids against the blue, billion-pound bottlejobs," said Neville on commentary for Sky Sports.

Asked about Neville's comments afterward, Pochettino said: "I didn’t hear what he said, but if you compare the age of the two groups, I think it is similar.

"I have a good relationship with Gary and I don’t know if that’s how I can take this opinion. But I respect his opinion.

"We are a young team and [it is] nothing to compare with Liverpool [just] because they finished with also a few young players. I think it’s impossible [to compare the two sides].

"[Neville] knows, he knows the dynamics are completely different. We were playing today Liverpool and Chelsea.

"I think it’s not fair to talk in this way if he said that.”

Van Dijk: Liverpool want more

18:52 , Matt Verri

Virgil van Dijk is eyeing “a few more” trophies this season after the club lifted their first with a dramatic Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League, a point clear of Manchester City and two ahead of Arsenal. They have an FA Cup fifth-round match to come in midweek, at home to Southampton, and a last-16 clash in the Europa League against Sparta Prague next month.

Liverpool will hope Klopp’s final match as manager comes back at Wembley on May 25, when a quadruple could potentially be on the line, but Van Dijk refused to look that far ahead.

“I won't speak too soon, but hopefully we can win a few more,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

"The talk about it being Klopp's last season is not from within the squad, that is from the outside."

Cole Palmer 7

Denied certain goals by an outstanding Kelleher saves either side of half-time. Grew in stature as the game went on and saw plenty of the ball in the second half.

Nicolas Jackson 5

Unlucky to be flagged marginally offside ahead of squaring for Sterling to score in the first half. Created a chance for Gallagher shortly before he was subbed but largely struggled to make inroads against Liverpool's defenders.

Post-match thoughts from Van Dijk

17:57 , Matt Verri

“We will never take these things for granted.”

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

17:49 , Matt Verri

Virgil van Dijk just wasn't to be denied, despite his first goal being ruled out controversially for offside.

With so many big players missing, Liverpool needed the Dutchman to step up and that's exactly what he did.

Mauricio Pochettino looks close to tears but jubilation for Jurgen Klopp, who is guaranteed at least one trophy in his long goodbye.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

17:47 , Matt Verri

Many will view this as an unforgivable cup final defeat for Chelsea, who can't beat a half-academy Liverpool team at Wembley Stadium.

There's never any shame in losing to Liverpool, but in these circumstances, it feels like a wasted opportunities.

Questions will remain about Mauricio Pochettino, these players and the ownership.

105 mins: Palmer flicks a header at goal, straight at Kelleher.

Just the one minute added on.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

17:20 , Matt Verri

Given Liverpool's injury problems and their mid-week slog against Luton, an extra 30 minutes should really suit Chelsea.

17:03 , Matt Verri

It was Chelsea with all the big chances after Van Dijk’s header was ruled out.

Liverpool have a very, very young team on the pitch now. Pochettino’s side have to fancy their chances.

Would be a remarkable victory for Liverpool if they pull this off.

It’s been an extraordinary match, and we’ve got another 30 minutes of it.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Chelsea piling on the pressure, it’s one-way traffic now.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:55 , Matt Verri

16:54 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Six minutes added on!

Can either side snatch victory in normal time?

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:53 , Matt Verri

Jackson is off.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

He does look up, he finds him... KELLEHER SAVES!

Liverpool goalkeeper flies off his line to make the save. Huge moment.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:48 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Still every chance we get a goal in normal time, there are still opportunities for both sides.

Gusto plays the ball across the face of goal, Nkunku slides in at the back post but he can’t quite make up the ground.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:47 , Matt Verri

83 mins: And now Konate joins Mac Allister in the book.

Again Chelsea look to break, Fernandez pokes the ball forward as Konate dives in. Handball from the defender, who blocked the ball by any means necessary.

Why was Virgil van Dijk header ruled out?

16:46 , Matt Verri

It could prove to be the defining moment of the final.

Virgil van Dijk headed home from a free-kick, but after a long wait for a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check, the goal was ruled out for a “technical offside.”

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:37 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Anyone’s guess what we get next in this match.

Nkunku of all people is in his own box, pretty much at left-back, to clear the ball with Elliott lurking.

Corner for Liverpool. Mac Allister deep to Konate, his header is defended well by Chilwell.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Big hug and smile for Clark, who is on to replace Bradley.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

16:34 , Matt Verri

That feels like another big VAR decision which has set a precedent that will be impossible to uphold in future.

Those kind of blocks happen at every set piece at this level. Are they all really going to be policed in the same way from now on?

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:33 , Matt Verri

Colwill flicks a corner on, Disasi is completely free at the back post but he gets it all wrong from a couple of yards out.

It’s been ruled out!

Wow. That’s incredibly harsh. Endo was offside, but basically stood still as Colwill ran into him.

Liverpool are stunned.

16:25 , Matt Verri

Hold up...

The referee is over to look at the monitor. A VAR review for offside - was Endo offside as he blocked Colwill from getting back towards Van Dijk?

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

16:24 , Matt Verri

Cometh the hour...

With so many stars missing, Liverpool needed their other big players to step up and Van Dijk has done just that.

Chelsea have tended to be much worse against teams when conceding first and they now face a big test of their mettle.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Chelsea screaming for a free-kick, as Konate and Jackson challenge for the ball. Referee says the pair were holding each other.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

16:10 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Liverpool straight on the attack, Diaz is away down the left. Gets to the byline, fires the ball across the six-yard box but Disasi is there to turn it behind. Corner.

Robertson swings it in, comes to Bradley on the edge of the area. He takes too long to shoot, but Endo does get an effort away. Flashes wide.

Back underway!

16:08 , Matt Verri

Second-half is up and running at Wembley.

First-half stats

16:05 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have just about edged the the possession stats.

Eight shots for the Reds, three of those on target. Chelsea have forced Kelleher into two saves.

The two 2022 finals between these sides went to penalty shootouts after goalless matches - are we in for more of the same?

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

15:59 , Matt Verri

A wonderful half of football in a cup final once again between these two teams.

It's just surprising there have been no goals. Very similar to the two finals of 2022.

A huge save from Keller to deny Palmer early in the match - the Chelsea man should really have scored that.

15:46 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Mac Allister leaves one on Caicedo - fairly confident that one was not accidental, after all the Chelsea midfielder’s fouls so far.

Coming towards the end of this half, but we’ll have a fair bit of added-time.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

Cody Gakpo heads an effort off the post.

This is some game, really, between two teams that are very open but have quality to punish each others.

40 mins: OFF THE POST!

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

That is a very marginal offside to rule out Raheem Sterling's goal.

Nicolas Jackson was judged to be just ahead of the play, in shades of Romelu Lukaku's similar incident in the 2022 final.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Out come the lines... and it is just about offside.

Great decision from the assistant. Chelsea inches away from taking the lead but it remains goalless.

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

15:34 , Matt Verri

32 mins: The Chelsea celebrations are cut short.

Jackson makes the run in behind and he’s away, squaring it for Sterling to finish at the back post.

It’s very, very tight. Over to VAR.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

15:31 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp is furious as Moises Caicedo has injured Ryan Gravenberch by stamping on his ankle.

He has been stretchered off, with a brief VAR review not finding anything worthy of a red card.

It was clearly accidental, but was it dangerous and out of control?

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: After that long delay, we’re back up and running.

Gomez is on for Gravenberch. Looks like Bradley will be at right wing now, with Elliott dropping back into midfield. Gomez at right-back.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:25 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Chelsea much more in the match now, they have finally settled.

Gakpo and Gravenberch down in the space of a few seconds - referee waves play on both times. Liverpool less than impressed.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

15:24 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have had their biggest chance as Caoimhin Kelleher saves a Cole Palmer shot from point blank range.

21 mins: Incredible save from Kelleher!

15:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Chilwell the latest to struggle in the face of the Liverpool press, brings down Bradley. Yet another Liverpool free-kick.

Robertson takes it, Colwill is up well to head the ball away.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

15:17 , Matt Verri

Chelsea keep giving away the ball in dangerous positions and are lucky not to be 1-0 down.

Luis Diaz, again, keeps wasting chances. It's a good job Mohamed Salah, and to a lesser extent Diogo Jota, are not available for this one.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:16 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Petrovic forced into action!

Mac Allister tries his luck from distance, comfortable for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

It’s a much better save seconds later, as Diaz cuts onto his right foot and hammers a strike towards the near post. It was a disastrous slip from Disasi to let him in.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:14 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Madness from Diaz, shoves Gallagher in the back out wide. He was going nowhere. Chelsea now with a free-kick in a good position.

Chilwell clips it in, headed out to Gusto just outside the box and he sends a weak effort straight at Kelleher.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:13 , Matt Verri

11 mins: “Chelsea are like a box of frogs,” says Gary Neville. It has been frantic.

Gusto does win them a corner though, as the Blues look to get themselves into this match.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

Chelsea really struggling to play through Liverpool's press in the early stages.

Three times in a matter of minutes the Reds stole possession with some committed pressing.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: All Liverpool at the moment.

Robertson swings a decent ball in, Gakpo looks to be free at the back post but Diaz gets there in front of him and loops a header straight at Petrovic.

Should really have left that for Gakpo.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:09 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Chelsea are a bit too keen - they’re giving away a lot of free-kicks already. Caicedo dives in on Endo, brings him down.

Another chance for Liverpool to put a dangerous ball into the middle.

Mac Allister takes, Disasi misses his header but Konate can’t control it at the back post.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:07 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Robertson has started well for Liverpool, a couple of good breaks down that left wing.

Colwill then gets himself into trouble as he brings the ball out of defence. Heavy touch, Mac Allister gets there first and Colwill lunges in trying to make up for it.

Lucky to avoid a yellow card.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

15:05 , Matt Verri

Both teams have been playing it around the back, but lost the ball when it has reached their attackers.

There's a feeling of big final nerves around the place.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

15:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Chelsea very aggressive in their press early on, a couple of fouls in the opening minute as they close Liverpool down.

Nobody getting a second on the ball so far.
