Cheboygan baseball struggles to generate consistent offense in losses to Petoskey

CHEBOYGAN – Offense was hard to come by for the Cheboygan baseball team Wednesday, as they suffered 11-0 and 8-2 defeats in a home doubleheader sweep to Petoskey.

Dylan Balazovic registered the lone hit in game one for the Chiefs (2-4).

Charlie Godfrey took the loss on the mound, striking out one and allowing four hits in three innings pitched. Chase Swanson, Nolan Schley and James Charboneau all pitched in relief, striking out a batter apiece.

In the nightcap, Sean Postula doubled and scored a run to lead the Chiefs, who received a hit and an RBI from Evan Blaskowski, and a run scored from Farver.

Postula was the losing pitcher, striking out two, allowing three hits and walking three in one inning. Charboneau and Balazovic each pitched in relief, striking out two batters each.

“Petoskey is a good team, they hit the ball well, and they play solid defense,” Cheboygan coach Kevin Baller said. “I saw a lot of positives tonight regardless of the scores.”

Cheboygan hosts Onaway in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday.

Mackinaw City softball splits with Central Lake

MACKINAW CITY – The Mackinaw City softball team earned a split with Central Lake by capturing a 20-12 victory in game one of a home doubleheader on Tuesday.

Poppy Wallace’s one hit, two RBIs and two runs scored and Rian Esper’s one hit, one RBI and two runs scored paced the Comets, who received an RBI and three runs scored apiece from Gracie Beauchamp and Jersey Beauchamp. Other contributors included Emily Kruczynski (RBI, two runs), Vanessa Groenewoud (four runs), Jillian Poumade (two runs), Kenzlie Currie (run) and Liz Kruczynski (run).

Groenewoud was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and allowing one hit in six innings.

However, the Comets suffered a 19-4 setback in the nightcap.

Jersey Beauchamp, Gracie Beauchamp and Wallace each had a hit and scored for Mackinaw City. Esper scored a run.

Julia Short took the loss on the mound, striking out three and allowing eight hits in 1 2/3 innings. Groenewoud pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, striking out two and allowing a hit.

Mackinaw City (1-1) hosts Newberry on Friday.
