Chargers Squeeze Past Rams, 27-24
The St. Louis defense had no answer for Ryan Mathews as he led the way to a close victory for the Chargers against the Rams, 27-24, at home.
Philip Rivers finished the game 29 of 35 with 291 yards passing, one touchdown and one pick. On the Rams side, Shaun Hill went 18 for 35 with 198 yards passing, one touchdown, two picks and one fumble.
Mathews was a focal point for the Chargers, running at will on the Rams for 105 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown. In the third quarter, he found a seam for a 32-yard score. Keenan Allen was a highlight, despite letting the ball slip away more than once, pulling in six balls for 104 yards with a touchdown and two fumbles.
The San Diego defense was the difference in the victory, giving up 107 yards rushing and 217 passing while taking back one fumble for a touchdown. They were able to bring down Hill for one sack.
Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey had a big day with 89 receiving yards and one touchdown. Running back Tre Mason had a good game as well with 62 rushing yards and 26 receiving.
The Chargers travel to Baltimore next week to meet the Ravens (6-4) while the Rams are at home to take on the Raiders (1-10).
