Chargers CB Michael Davis tabbed as underrated defensive free agent

Leonard Williams, Justin Simmons, Shaquil Barrett, Carl Lawson, among others spotlight the pending defensive free agents.

However, there are a few other defenders that may not be garnering the attention as much as the others but still possess a lot of worth.

Among the crop is cornerback Michael Davis, who was recognized by Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar as one of 11 most underrated defensive free agents in 2021.

In 2020, Davis allowed 37 catches on 57 targets for 475 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and a Positive Play Rate of 54.4%.

More opportunities to make plays, and a couple mistakes, but overall, Davis displays fine form in all kinds of coverage. In man coverage last season, Davis allowed 16 catches on 33 targets for 175 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a Positive Play Rate of 39.4%.

After originally signing with Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent in 2017, Davis has shown that he is capable as a starter. The former BYU steadily contributed the past three seasons, showing improvement both as a tackler and in coverage.

In my opinion, L.A. must do everything in their might to retain him. The cornerback room is already questionable with Casey Hayward and Chris Harris Jr. both coming off of injuries and lack of depth.

Davis, on the other hand, is young with a lot of potential. He is a solid No. 2 corner with plenty of room to grow, especially under the expertise of head coach Brandon Staley, who is a defensive guru that can maximize his full potential.
