Florida softball vs LSU: What to know

UF has begun conference play with a 7-2 record. It took two of three on the road from No. 14 Alabama on March 9-11 and from No. 16 Mississippi State last weekend. It also swept Kentucky at home March 22-24.

LSU, meanwhile, swept Kentucky and No. 13 Texas A&M, but lost two out of three vs Ole Miss and at No. 11 Missouri. It ranks second in the SEC, behind just No. 3 Georgia.

Entering this season, many questions surrounded the young Gators after their worst season in years.

Florida (32-5), though, has exceeded expectations, primarily on the backs of two freshman hurlers – Keegan Rothrock and Ava Brown. For the season, both hold an ERA under 2.20 (Rothrock 1.46, Brown 2.19). Their ERAs dip a bit in SEC play, but Rothrock still holds at 2.67. Her 16 wins lead the conference.

Brown, meanwhile, has also excelled at the plate with eight HRs and 25 RBIs. In general, the Gators offense has shined this season. Its scores nine runs per game, third in the country. Redshirt senior Skylar Wallace leads the SEC in BA (.479), runs (58) and stolen bases (24).

Jocelyn Erickson tops the conference in RBIs (51), and Kendra Falby in hits (53).

The Gators hope to feast on the Tigers pitching. LSU ranks ninth in the SEC in ERA, but its bigger issue may be on offense. In SEC play, the Bayou Bengals only topped four runs four times.
