New winners crowned on first day of Morris County Track & Field Championships

BOONTON – Juliana Behringer saved the best for last. After “falling on the floor” during every javelin attempt in her old softball spikes, the Hanover Park sophomore had a 113-8 final attempt to win the Morris County title.

Not bad for a relatively new thrower, who only switched from softball when she found out about indoor track and field as a freshman.

“I didn’t have anyone to tell me I should be trying this new sport out,” said Behringer, who had won shot and javelin at the NJAC small-school championships a week earlier.

“My arm brought me this far, my natural ability to throw things. … I found out it was really cool for me to be a thrower. It makes me really happy. I relax once I finish and think I did great. It’s competing against myself.”

The Morris County Championships continue Wednesday at Boonton High School.

Natasha Redmond is trying to make the most of her first full outdoor season. The Mount Olive junior spent the first month of last spring in a boot, and then focused on relays.

Redmond doubled in the 100 and 400 meters on Tuesday, her first outdoor championships.

“It’s more of a mental game, instead of a physical one,” she said. “My coaches have given me the stamina of an ox, but I still have more to do. I have to keep on doing my best, not just for myself but for my team as well.”

Track and field: Small sister schools take home trophies at NJAC Championships

Villa Walsh freshman Blythe Dudley isn’t new to distance running, but she’s a first-time Morris County champion. Dudley ran away from the field in the 1,600 meters, winning by four seconds.

“It was really special to run with those girls. I have so much respect for them,” said Dudley, flashing a metallic smile. “I tried to keep focused, keep my head in the game. I try to keep running really fun.”

∎ Despite running in an unseeded heat, Kinnelon senior Jack Ahart won the 400 meters in a meet-record 47.93.

∎ Morristown junior Jason Meza defended his intermediate hurdles county title.

∎ Morristown Beard junior Spencer Anderson defended his county championship in the 100 meters.

∎ Delbarton senior Collin Boler repeated as the Morris County 1,600 winner.
