Cavalier baseball falls to Seaforth
Apr. 17—Southern Lee baseball held a 5-2 lead after three complete innings Monday night, but then had a meltdown in the top of the fourth inning, allowing nine runs and falling 15-5 to visiting Seaforth in six.
The Cavaliers should have gotten out of the fourth with only one run allowed at most, but after failing to record an out on a fielders' choice play with two on and one out, Southern's outfield botched back-to-back fly balls and then had a wild pitch that tied the game at 5. Caiden Cox then got a strikeout, but since only two outs had been recorded, the inning went on. Four more Seaforth batters in a row reached after that, and the Hawks led 11-5 by the time the defense got off the field.
Nine of the 10 Southern Lee batters who hit after that point made outs. Caleb Waters singled in the fourth but was left on base.
The Cavaliers tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first when TJ McAuley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two out. It was 2-1 in favor of Seaforth when Southern got going in the third. Cooper Harrington led off with a single, and Waters doubled to tie the game. After a walk and a McAuley single loaded the bases, Bryan McCollum stroked a two-run double into left field and Dylan McBurnett followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2 in favor of the home team.
Waters went 3-for-3 on the day to lead the Southern offense. He was the only Cavalier with more than one hit.
McBurnett started the game and struck out four in 3 1/3 innings, but allowed seven hits. Due to the errors, only three of them were earned. Cox came into replace him and was hit hard before McCollum came on to get the game's final four outs.
Southern Lee visited Union Pines on Tuesday night and will host them Friday.
