Catching up with former area athletes: Augustana golfer Masy Mock claims first career NSIC weekly award
Sep. 7—SIOUX FALLS — Augustana's Masy Mock was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's golfer of the week, the league announced Thursday, Sept. 7.
It is the first NSIC weekly honor of Mock's career. The former Mitchell High School standout, who is now a junior for the Vikings, tied for seventh place at the Central Region Fall Preview in Blue Springs, Missouri.
She shot 73-77 to shoot 150 and was the top finisher from the NSIC on the par-72 course, powering Augie to a team title with a score of 601 and atop a field of 17 teams.
Mock returns to the Vikings after a stroke average of 78.5 last season, which ranked in the top-10 in the NSIC last season.
Augustana returns to action Sept. 25-26 at another regional preview event, this time hosted by Rogers State in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell High School product Caroline Titze was named the University of Sioux Falls' defensive player to watch to start the 2023 women's soccer season by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as part of its preseason coaches' poll.
Titze, a junior for the Cougars, started in nine matches last season, saving 69 shots and recording a .812 save percentage. A Psychology, Social Work and Social Science major at USF, she was named to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence list and also earned the Division II Athletics Director Association Academic Achievement Award.
"Caroline will bring a lot of experience for our team in the goal this fall," USF coach Brittany Domino said. "She is a player that has the capabilities to keep our team in games when needed. She is not only a major contributor to our team defensively but she is also a threat in the attack with her passing accuracy out of the back. She has really grown in her role as a leader throughout this last year and we believe this will push her to have an even more successful junior season."
USF, which was picked to finish 14th out of 15 teams in the conference in the preseason poll, has played one game so far, a 1-0 loss to Rogers State (Okla.) on Sept. 1 in which Titze made six saves. The Cougars resume the schedule this weekend at Fort Hays State (Kan.) and Northwest Missouri State on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10, respectively, before returning to Sioux Falls for their conference home opener against Wayne State (Neb.) on Sept. 14.
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — The Dordt University men's cross country team begins the 2023 season with the No. 2 ranking in the NAIA preseason coaches poll.
Thaniel Schroeder, a Freeman Academy alumnus and graduate-level student at Dordt, returns to the team after helping the Defenders to the national championship last season. He is one of 19 overall returners for Dordt from last year's title team.
Schroeder was 10th last season at the Great Plains Athletic Conference meet in a time of 26 minutes, 5.2 seconds. He set a career-best 8,000-meter time at Dordt's home meet on Oct. 8, 2022, a time of 25:22.7.
For Dordt, it is the 34th consecutive NAIA coaches' poll in which the Defenders have been ranked in the top 25, dating back to the 2018 season. Dordt owned the No. 3 spot in the final ranking of the 2022 regular season and then went on to win its first NAIA National Championship last fall at the championship event held at Apalachee Regional Park Trail in Tallahassee, Florida. Milligan (Tenn.) is the preseason No. 1 team in NAIA men's cross country.
Dordt will compete for the first time this season on Sept. 9 in a home meet in Sioux Center, Iowa, in the Dordt Sunflower Open.
