Carter, Turner make history, secure bronze at OSSAA State Wrestling Tournament

Feb. 24—OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Buffs are coming home with new hardware.

Multiple local wrestlers battled Saturday at the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association State Wrestling Tournaments, with Kenneth Carter and Emery Turner sealing third-place podium finishes alongside a bit of history.

Kenneth Carter started his day against Altus' Conner Nunez in the 157 blood round, earning a substantial lead and eventual third-period fall to ensure his spot on the podium.

He next faced Grove's Gavin Wyatt in the pair's final bout of the season. Carter jumped into the early lead with a first-period takedown, and then earned an escape to start the second. Although Wyatt earned a pair of takedowns, Carter slipped out of his clutches to stay out in front.

Wyatt tied up the match at the start of the third period, but Carter had other intentions for the final score — securing the takedown and the 7-5 win to be a bronze medal winner and put his name on McAlester's historic wall of state placers.

Carter finishes his season with a 35-7 record, and a third-place victory at the OSSAA Class 5A State Tournament.

Emery Turner made history as McAlester's first female wrestler to place third at state. She started her day against Noble's Katie Adams, earning a takedown to jump into the lead before an eventual first-period pin to move into the third-place bout.

She next faced Norman North's Gabriella Nava, whom she previously defeated in Thursday's opening round with a first-period fall. In the rematch, Turner earned a quick takedown and nearfall to roll into the lead after the first period. She stayed on the attack, increasing her lead and riding out her way to history — becoming McAlester High School's highest-medaled girls wrestler.

She ends her season with a record of 24-3, and a third-place podium finish at the OSSAA Class 6A State Tournament.

Earlier in the day at 5A-boys 120, Kam Hutchison faced off against Coweta's Tohmi Carney. The two wrestlers fought to gain position and advantage, trading off scores and the lead. But Carney was able to stall long enough as Hutchison was on the attack to hold on for the 6-5 win.

Hutchison ends his season with a 31-7 record and a state tournament appearance.

In 5A girls, Wilburton-Moyers' Madison Roe battled against Elk City's Madison Holladay. The pair were locked in a physical battle, refusing to let the other gain an advantage. Although Holladay earned an escape point in the second period, Roe tied it up with an escape to start the third.

With just seconds remaining, Holladay made one final shot — securing the takedown and the win. Roe finishes her season with a record of 26-5 and a state tournament appearance.
