Carroll County high school sports week in review: A look at the top teams, players and performances (Dec. 4-9)
Team of the Week
Gerstell Academy girls basketball
The Falcons won their first three games to start the 2023-24 season. They opened with a 14-point win over Mount Carmel, then picked up a measure of revenge against St. Timothy’s, the team that knocked Gerstell out of the IAAM B Conference playoffs last season.
On Friday, Gerstell went to Liberty to matchup against the Lions, traditionally one of Carroll County’s top public school programs. Gerstell got big games from Eniyah Stinnette, Taylor Moran and others to post a convincing, 59-41 victory.
Honorable mentions
Liberty wrestling: The Lions swept their way through the Patterson Mill Husky Duals, going 8-0 at the event over the weekend. The Lions picked up wins over Dulaney, Winston Churchill, Hammond, Glen Burnie, Bohemia Manor, North East and Dundalk, before beating Broadneck in the championship round, 42-30.
Francis Scott Key girls basketball: The Eagles were the only county public school to go 2-0 during the first week of the season. The defending county champions beat Walkersville and Williamsport by an average of 13.5 points.
Five-star players
Drew Watkins, Francis Scott Key girls basketball: The senior lit up the scoreboard with 31 points in FSK’s opening win over Walkersville. She followed with 13 points and three rebounds against Williamsport.
Keelan Bailey, Liberty wrestling: Bailey was the sole wrestler to go 8-0 for the Lions at their win at the Husky Duals. Three of Bailey’s wins came by pinfall.
Cailyn Stine, Century indoor track and field: Stine had a strong outing at the Terry Baker Invitational at Hagerstown Community College. She won the 500 meters, finished second in the 300 and ran on the Knights’ second-place 4×400 team.
Tristan West, Liberty boys basketball: The junior had a phenomenal season opener, scoring 19 points while grabbing 14 rebounds in a one-point win over Catoctin.
Chidima Iziogo, Century wrestling: Izoigo won the heavyweight weight class at this weekend’s Battle at the Boro wrestling tournament at Boonsboro.
