Carmel, Yorktown surge in latest lohud high school football rankings

We had a couple of surprises last week.

Ossining upset North Rockland. Carmel upended John Jay-East Fishkill.

This week's rankings have been adjusted to reflect those outcomes. On the list of games that could have an impact this week are Stepinac-Cardinal Hayes, Somers-Harrison, North Rockland-Suffern and Lakeland-Pleasantville.

10. Mamaroneck (2-1)

There is no stable of standouts to rely on this year, but Henry Mackie and T.J. Smith have been pretty darn impressive for the Tigers early on.

9. Rye (2-2)

A demanding early schedule has exacted a physical toll and the Garnets might need a little time before some key playmakers get healthy and get back in the lineup.

8. John Jay-East Fishkill (3-1)

All the momentum the Patriots had is gone after failing to win the line of scrimmage last weekend against Carmel, which came in looking to make some noise.

7. Pleasantville (3-0)

The playoff conversation is going to be even livelier after the Panthers upended Rye in an early-season meeting of the two favorites in Class B this season.

6. Yorktown (4-0)

If there is a Class A team built to give the defending state champions next door a run, the Huskers appear to be it. We'll find out when they meet in the regular-season finale.

5. Iona Prep (2-2)

A disappointing 44-24 loss at defending NYCHSFL champion St. Anthony's quickly became a learning experience. Playing the next three weeks could be just what the Gaels need.

4. Carmel (2-1)

Tristain Werlau had a breakout day running the ball in a win over John Jay-East Fishkill. A now-healthy defense also made a statement, recording eight sacks and limiting the Patriots to seven points.

3. Somers (3-1)

Dean Palazzolo is the deep threat the Tuskers needed to keep defenses from crowding the line. The sophomore caught seven Mac Sullivan passes on Friday, collecting 177 yards and two touchdowns.

The Crusaders are officially into the meat of their schedule, playing Cardinal Hayes at Columbia University on Friday and visiting Iona Prep next week. Buckle up.
