It’s not often a standard code violation in tennis is noteworthy, but this one is.

Carlos Ramos issued Marin Cilic a code violation for slamming and mangling his racket during his Sunday Davis Cup loss to Sam Querrey.

Attention on Ramos after Serena Williams incident

Ramos is the official who handed Serena Williams three code violations in her U.S. Open final loss to Naomi Osaka. Williams berated Ramos during a meltdown, calling him a thief and accusing him of being sexist for issuing penalties that she believes men get away with.

Cilic, not known for losing his temper, couldn’t remember the last time he smashed a racket and did not protest the call.

“Usually when you break a racket, you get a code violation,” Cilic told reporters.

Debate ensues after U.S. Open final

The incident between Williams and Ramos has sparked multiple debates over perceived sexism in tennis officiating and whether Ramos pushed too hard to enforce rules on the stage of the U.S. Open final.

Umpires threatened to boycott her matches and unionize in response to the 23-time Grand Slam winner’s accusations.

A New York Times study published on Friday concluded that men have been penalized more than women by a large margin in Grand Slam events over the last 20 years.
