Cardinals OLB coach Charlie Bullen takes job at Illinois

The Arizona Cardinals are in the process of hiring a new head coach and that could mean the dismissal of many of the coaches on the previous staff.

One is leaving on his own, taking a job in college.

Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen was announced as the outside linebackers coach and pass rush coordinator for the University of Illinois Illini.

He had been on the Cardinals’ defensive staff under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph since 2019. He joined as an assistant linebackers coach and then was promoted in 2020 to coach outside linebackers.

His departure doesn’t necessarily mean anything in and of itself, but it is a sign that the defensive staff will be different for the Cardinals in 2023. That would mean that Vance Joseph is not likely going to be the head coach (he has interviewed for the position) or retained as defensive coordinator with a new head coach.
