Cardinals’ offseason needs: Quarterback
With a new general manager and coaching staff, the Arizona Cardinals have a lot of work to do with the roster coming off a 4-13 season.
Virtually every position group has some level of need to be addressed.
Over the next few days in this offseason series, we will take a look at each position group, what the offseason outlook is, what questions they have what what level of need is there — critical, urgent or secondary.
We start with the quarterback position.

Who is on the roster?
The Cardinals have two quarterbacks under contract in 2023.
Kyler Murray, signed through 2029
Colt McCoy, signed through 2023
David Blough, restricted free agent
Trace McSorley, unrestricted free agent
Blough passed McSorley on the depth chart late in the season. He perhaps could be part of the Cardinals’ plans this offseason as he joined the league with the Detroit Lions. New Cardinals assistant general manager Dave Sears spent years with the Lions in the scouting department.
Questions and issues
The Cardinals have some big questions.
The first is about Murray. He tore his ACL late in the year and had surgery in January. It is unknown how soon he will come back. He is expected to miss at least part of next season.
McCoy had a minor procedure in the offseason as well. He will be limited in the offseason program.
Offseason need: Urgent
As of now, the only two quarterbacks they have under contract will not be able to start the offseason on the field.
With the new staff, they also do not have anyone who knows the offensive system.
They need to bring in at least two quarterbacks and probably one will need to be connected to offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
If McCoy is viewed as the starter in Murray’s absence, they could bring in a couple of potential third-stringers/backups.
