Canadiens acquire Alex Newhook from Avalanche for picks, prospect

The Canadiens have acquired 2019 first-round pick Alex Newhook ahead of Wednesday's NHL draft.

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Tuesday they have acquired forward Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the 31st and 37th overall picks of the 2023 NHL Draft, as well as defenceman Gianni Fairbrother.

Newhook, 22, has registered 27 goals and 66 points in 159 career games after being selected with the 16th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft. The St. John's, NL., native is a restricted free agent coming off his entry-level deal.

Fairbrother, 22, was the Canadiens' third round selection in 2019. He registered seven points in 25 games with the AHL's Laval Rocket last season.

The 31st pick Montreal is giving up in the deal had been previously acquired from the Florida Panthers.
