Calvary splits pair of pool games in national tournament

Oct. 27—CEDARVILLE, Ohio — Calvary opened the NCSAA (National Christian School Athletic Association) national tournament on Thursday by splitting its first two pool play games.

The Eagles (22-2) lost the first game to Rolling Hills of Kentucky 2-0 with scores of 25-23 and 30-28.

"Rolling Hills was a big, tough team with a lot of hitters," Calvary head coach John Wall said. "It took us some time to figure out our blocks, but in game two, Bethany Carrington finally found a way to break some of their attacks and got some key touches and blocks."

Carrington finished with seven points, six digs, four kills, four blocks and an ace.

Shilah Ganoe led Calvary with 11 kills and added four digs and four points.

"Shilah had some great attacks down the line which the Tornados had trouble adjusting to, but we were always on defense and we just could not get enough passes to our hitters to make up the deficit," Wall said.

Allie Scritchfield recorded 16 assists, eight digs and six points.

In the second game of the day, Calvary swept Christ the Cornerstone of North Carolina 2-0, winning 25-14 and 25-10.

"The Defenders did a great job digging our attacks, but taking the earlier loss gave us a gut check and made us realize we need to come out stronger and that's what we did," Wall said.

Ganoe led the Eagles with six kills, adding five points, five digs and an ace.

Scritchfield finished with 14 assists, eight points and five digs.

Carrington recorded five digs and three kills, three blocks, three points and three aces.

Paula Ganoe added five points, five kills and five digs.

Calvary concludes pool play on Friday at 10 a.m. against Algoma Christian School of Michigan who is also 1-1 in pool play.

"We still have a path to repeat, but taking a loss to open the tournament makes things a little harder," Wall said.
