California driver wins fifth annual Stock Car nationals at Deer Creek Speedway

Sep. 17—SPRING VALLEY — Orcutt, California driver Dylan Thornton won the fifth annual Stock Car Nationals at Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday.

Thornton started on the poll and was able to hold off Chatfield native Lucas Schott to capture the $10,000 prize.

Elijah Zevenbergen (Ocheyedan, Iowa), Jim Chisholm (Osage, Iowa) and Jacob Bleess rounded out the top five. Lucas' brother, Levi Schott, finished 10th.

It was Thornton's ninth feature victory and first at Deer Creek this season. He was well-versed with the track, having made the trip to race his Modified car a few times this summer.

The night started with close to 80 stock cars on the night and over 50 hobby stocks. Thornton won his heat, which was the first of eight heat races on the night.

Jesse Brown of Nashua, Iowa won the USRA Stock Car non-qualifier feature.

Adel, Iowa native Dylan Nelson won the 25-lap hobby stock feature.

Nelson started 11th but quickly surged up to the front before holding off Granada, Minn. driver Gavin Bussinger to take victory lane and the $1,500 prize. It was Nelson's first feature win at Deer Creek this year and third feature win overall.

Luke Schluetter (New Hampton, Iowa), Dylan Clinton (West Union, Iowa) and Paul Seabrooke (Decorah, Iowa) — who started 24th — rounded out the top five of the 30-car feature field.
