Caiden Baker, Warrick Elder and Kamryn Wagler earn Week 1 Athlete and Players of the Week

HILLSDALE COUNTY — The first athlete of the week and basketball players of the week awards were voted on and winners have been chosen by readers.

The Week 1 athlete of the week honor Reading wrestler Caiden Baker. Baker (175) won his way to an undefeated start this season at 5-0. During the first week of wrestling, he earned first place at the Concord Invitational and secured four victories via pinfall.

North Adams-Jerome's Kamryn Wagler (photo unavailable) was voted the girls basketball player of the week. Wagler was nominated after helping the Rams earn a victory to start their season. Wagler had 15 total points, four rebounds and two assists.

Jonesville senior Warrick Elder won the boys basketball player of the week honor. Elder helped the Comets to a 2-2 start to their season. Elder had 89 total points through the first four games of the season, including a 32-point game against Ypsilanti Arbor Prep.

Athlete of the Week Honorable Mentions

  • Carson Playford - Jonesville Wrestling: Carson Playford (138 pounds) helped Jonesville earn a team win at the Grover Memorial Invitational at Concord High School. He, along with teammate Blake Ryan (113), earned first place medals. Playford pinned both of his opponents in the tournament. He also earned another pin against Hillsdale at the Reading duals.

  • Miles Brown - Hillsdale Wrestling: Hornet (150) wrestler Miles Brown went undefeated in the first week of wrestling, earning wins over Jonesville, Eie-Mason and Sturgis. He earned one pinfall.

  • Chloe Manifold - Hillsdale Girls Bowling: Manifold helped Hillsdale varsity girls bowling earn two victories over Clinton and Blissfield to start the year, leading the team with a 426 series against Clinton. Manifold then took third place at the Wildcat Blastoff singles tournament in Tecumseh. Manifold bowled a 757 in match play and then bowled to a bronze finish in the final bracket tournament.

  • Aubree Ervans - Reading Girls Basketball: Ervans led the Rangers to a 2-0 start with 37 points, including a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds in their win over Homer.

  • Tyler Bills - Litchfield Boys Basketball: Bills led the Terriers to a 4-0 start. Bills scored 67 points and hit eight triples.

Girls Basketball Player of the Week Honorable Mentions

  • Aubree Ervans - Reading: Ervans led Reading to a 2-0 start to the 2023 season with 37 total points and one double-double game of 20 and 11 against Homer.

  • Karsyn Stebbins - Hillsdale: Stebbins led the Hornet scoring effort through two games, earning 24 total points and three triples, helping take down Union City for their first win of 2023.

  • Abby Bills - Litchfield: Bills combined for 25 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals through two games to keep the Terrier's undefeated.

  • Kailie Kurtz - Waldron: Kurtz combined for 26 points, 14 rebounds, 10 steals and eight assists to help Waldron earn a 2-0 start to the season.

  • Ava Mallar - Pittsford: Ava Mallar hit six 3-pointers in the Wildcats' win over North Adams-Jerome and had 28 combined points in two wins.

Boys Basketball Player of the Week Honorable Mentions

  • Dominic Scharer - Hillsdale Academy: Scharer has averaged 18.7 points a game and five rebounds to help his team earn a 3-0 start. This includes 23 points in their standout win over Concord.

  • Jack Bowles - Hillsdale: Bowles leads the Hornets with 65 total points and five triples through the team's 3-1 start.

  • Tyler Bills - Litchfield: Bills helped the Terriers earn a 4-0 start with 67 points and eight triples.

  • Brayden Wright - Reading: Wright averaged 17 points, 7.7 rebounds a game and 4.3 steals a game in Reading's 1-2 start to the season, including a19-point, six rebounds, six steals and six assists game against Camden-Frontier.
