Buggy rolls back into Big Ship

Jan. 21—MONTGOMERY — In classic Buggy Bowls style, there were plenty of borrowed buggy's in the parking lot and plenty of fans in the stands, as Barr-Reeve broke a two-game losing streak against North Daviess with a 39-26 win in the highly-contested rivalry. The win pushed Class A No. 2 B-R to 13-1, as Class 3A No. 13 ND fell to 11-4.

The Cougars used a deliberate style to take a 15-14 lead at the half, but B-R was able to outscore ND 25-14 in the second half, without hitting a 3-ball the entire game. The game was a juxtaposing of styles with both teams showing flashes of what have made them southern Indiana powerhouses over the last decade.

"If you would have told me that we would have beaten then without a 3-pointer, I wouldn't have believed you. I did think that our offensive rebounding was really important and Evan Wehmeier, Seth Wagler and Kendall Graber did a great job of rebounding," said B-R coach Josh Thompson.

"Our 2-1-2 press was pretty effective and I thought we did a much better job in the second half. We have done a better job of finishing lately."

Wagler was a big factor with nine Viking points, while Wehmeier posted 11 in the paint. Braydon Knepp and Donnie Miller split 12, while Landon Miller and Graber also scored.

ND did most of its damage in the first half, with Wyatt Bishop scoring eight total to lead and Landon Swartzentruber and Aaron Marner had six each. ND was hurt by going 4-10 from the line and 17 turnovers.

Wehmeier and Bishop traded buckets early in the game, but it wouldn't be until 4:19 when Wehmeier earned his second tally and a 4-2 lead. Viking Wagler turned a turnover into a basket, but Bishop answered with the game's first triple to cut it to 6-5, Barr-Reeve.

Collin Lengacher tied the game for ND with an athletic move under the basket, but is how the quarter would end, in a 7-7 tie.

Marner gave ND its first lead with a 3-point splash to make it 10-7. Keaton Graber pushed the Cougar lead to 12-9, but Landon Miller kept B-R close with a basket. Wagler tied the game at 14-all but a late free throw from ND's Luke Marner sent the Cougs into the half with a 15-14 lead.

Bishop opened the third with a 3-ball to go up by four points, after points from Wehmeier and Braydon Knepp the game was tied at 18 for the final tie of the game.

ND left the back door open and Donnie Miller picked up B-R's 20th point, and a pair of free throws from Wehmeier put B-R up by four. Miller extended the Viking margin to 27-19 with 1:11 left in the third. Wagler added a put-back at the buzzer and went into the final quarter with a 29-19 lead, as B-R outscored the Cougars 13-4 during the third quarter.

The Vikes took 1:45 off the clock before Landon Miller added a Viking bucket, and Wehmeier made it 33-21 with 5:00 to play. However a 3-ball from Aaron Marner put the margin back in single digits at 33-24.

Kendall Graber, Braydon Knepp and Donnie Miller pushed it to 39-24 before finishing off the win 39-26.

Also scoring for ND was Collin Lengacher with three, Keaton Graber with two and one from Luke Marner.

In the JV contest, Barr-Reeve won, 47-33. Kiersten Lengacher led with 14, Korben Boyd had 12, while Carson Yoder and Miller Thompson had seven each. ND was led by Grady Callison with 17 and Cole Boyd had seven.

B-R now holds a 64-16 lead in the series between the Daviess County foes.

The Vikings host Shoals on Friday, while ND entertains Clay City.
