Despite winning an event earlier this year in London and entering the United States trials as one of the favorites, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin did not qualify for the long jump competition at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. During the Olympic trials Goodwin managed to advance to the final round.

Receiving his coaches blessings, Marquise Goodwin returned to the track and field sports this past offseason in an attempt to make his second straight Olympic games. Qualifying for the London games with a jump that would have won the Gold Medal, Goodwin finished a disappointing but still respectable tenth place at the games.

With his training for the Olympics now almost certainly over — a bunch of extremely unlikely circumstances could see him qualify — Goodwin will now be returning to the Buffalo Bills and to the sport of football. However, just because the former Olympian is returning to the Bills it does not mean he is guaranteed a roster spot with the team this season.

Missing all of the offseason training and spending so much time away from the sport Marquise Goodwin will be fighting an uphill battle to earn himself a spot with the Buffalo Bills. One area of his game that should help him though is his fitness from participating and training for his track and field events.

With Sammy Watkins the only real set starter at wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills, Goodwin should have a legitimate shot at making the team’s roster. Despite the fact that he only has 20 catches during his 24 game career, Goodwin may be one of the better receivers on the Bills roster due to his overall athleticism.

Overall though, Goodwin is not going to be a major player in the long run for the Bills. Though he has been hampered by injuries it also appears that his true passion lies with pursuing a career in track and field.

Though he did fail to qualify for the United States Olympic team, Goodwin has been successful since his return to the long jump competition. Winning the silver medal at the Pan-am games, Goodwin held the 2016 best jump for a while earlier this year following his win in the Meeting Region Guadeloupe.

At only 25-years of age, Goodwin could easily be in competition in four more years to make the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Should he make the decision to get back into the sport in another couple of years, Goodwin would also be able to join a sport that is less physical — in terms of hits — and is something he has already proven his skill at. I doubt this is the last time we will be seeing Goodwin attempt to reach the Olympics.
