It’s been a tough start to the season for the Buffalo Bills. The offensive coordinator has already been sacked and the rest of the coaching staff may not be far behind. Losing to the Jets on Thursday night leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many Bills’ fans, one that only a win this Sunday can possibly cure.

Every week this season, we will spend one day a week taking a look at the offensive player — this week players — to watch and one day on the defensive player to watch from the Buffalo Bills. For this week’s game against the Cardinals, the Bills will have to find a way to defend the pass and do it at a much better level than they did against the Jets. Expected to lead that charge will be star cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Stephon Gilmore — Cornerback

Let’s just put it this way. Last week’s performance by the secondary was not subpar, it was just plain atrocious. Both Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby just couldn’t seem to compete with the Jets receivers and was constantly beat on short, intermediate, and deep passing plays. This quite simply cannot happen again.

Taking on a team with Carson Palmer throwing the football and Larry Fitzgerald at receiver, Stephon Gilmore needs to lead by example for the rest of the secondary and step up his play. Facing off against the Cardinals’ number one receiver, if Gilmore plays well it will have a major impact on the play of the rest of the defense.

However, if Gilmore again struggles, look for the rest of the defense to continue having problems. Failing to shut down Arizona’s passing game early will be deadly for the Buffalo Bills win chances and could lead to more heads rolling as we enter week four of the season.

While his play may not be the most important as others in the team can help generate defensive momentum, Gilmore is the star of the defense. His play will have much more of an effect than any other player, leading to him being our defensive player to watch for this week.
