Bucs, QB Baker Mayfield have mutual interest for extension

QB Baker Mayfield has done some baking in 2023, and it’s looking like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will want to run it back for 2024 (and possibly beyond).

The NFL’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Mayfield and the Bucs have mutual interest in extending Mayfield for the 2024 season after his performance in 2023. It isn’t over yet — and Mayfield also has a $1 million incentive to win the NFC South — but the team is clearly impressed by his work in leading the Bucs to a .500 record and an offense that has scored 31.5 points in the last few weeks.

As it stands, Mayfield has thrown for 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions in 2023. If he throws at least two touchdowns per game for the next three games, he’d be just the third Bucs quarterback to ever throw 30 or more touchdowns in a season along with Tom Brady (who has done it twice) and Jameis Winston (who has done it once). He’s garnered the support of his teammates in the locker room and the support of his head coach and general manager, so a reunion would make sense among the two parties.

Mayfield will have further opportunity to prove his worth with the next three games the Bucs play, and that will start with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Christmas Eve at 4:05 p.m.
