Brothers set to hit the gridiron Friday

Sep. 20—I don't remember exactly where, but I saw this anonymous quote the other day: "A brother will always stand by you."

I have the opportunity to see this on a daily basis covering local high school sports. Teammates have each other's back. They encourage and support each other through the good and the bad.

For the 4-1 South Decatur football team, the bond of No. 11 and No. 73 is even tighter than just teammates, they are brothers.

Senior Tyler Bishop and junior Toby Bishop are members of the Cougar football team and have shared the gridiron since the ages of four and five. These two captains anchor the defense for the Cougars, both ranked in the top 10 in Class A in the state in sacks for defensive ends.

Toby had 11.5 sacks last season to lead the state in Class A and was 11th in all classes in the state. His success on the gridiron earned him a college offer from UIndy.

"The brothers have been steady players for us the last two years. They have provided steady play at their respective positions and have anchored the defensive line for us this year," South Head Coach Rodney Martin said.

The Bishops and the rest of the Cougars are preparing for the annual Homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

South (4-1) hosts Cloverdale (2-3). The teams have one common opponent in Edinburgh. The Cougars defeated Edinburgh 52-14 in Week 3. The Clovers knocked off the Lancers 20-6 in Week 2.

Corbin Johnson leads the Cougars with 148.8 yards per game rushing. Levi Johnson leads Cloverdale with 45 yards per game rushing.

Defensively, the Cougars allow 16.8 points per game. The Clovers allow 39.4 points per game.
