“I kind of took off right around then. I knew 17 to 18 was going to be a tailwind, so I tried to pick it up right there to have like an easier section to run and get ahead, and just held on from there,” added Klingler.

The 46th annual Detroit Free Press Marathon course covered both sides of the U.S.-Canada Border, crossing the Detroit River twice, with a route that included both the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

Klingler was also quoted by the Free Press as saying “I’m happy that the bridge is early because it’s a long uphill, but other than that, for a marathon, it went pretty quick. It’s nothing crazy, but it’s flat and fast and the weather cooperating is where you could run really fast here.”

After graduating from Bronson High School, Klingler took his considerable long-distance talent to Albion College before moving on to the marathon circuit, culminating in a spot at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2020.

Tacoma, Washington, resident Kate Landau won the women’s portion of the race in a time of 2:50.06.
