If Broncos get Tony Romo, what happens to Siemian and Lynch?

The Denver Broncos failure to make the playoffs for a sixth-consecutive season was not the fault of the defense. They finished fourth in yards and did everything in their power to take this team into the postseason.

Unfortunately, the entire offense failed to do its job, and Denver finished 9-7 with no postseason. The rumors are now heavily linking this team to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Mike Klis from 9news.com reported that a source claimed that the Broncos would take a look at Romo if he were released and became a free agent, as opposed to trading for him.

If the Broncos end up with Romo, John Elway will have to immediately decide the futures of Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. There’s no way two guys will be content as backups, so one of them has to go.

Well, it’s quite obvious they’d prefer to keep Lynch and have him learn form Romo. They spent a first-round pick on him nearly 10 months ago, while Siemian is more ready and could fetch the Broncos a decent return.

Perhaps someone would give Denver a third-round pick or pair of mid-round selections for Siemian, but keeping him over Lynch would not be the right move.

We are jumping to conclusions here, so there’s no reason to think too far ahead of this. But if Elway wants Romo, he better talk to both guys and see who’s willing to wait for their chance.

They drafted Brock Osweiler in 2012, just a month after signing Peyton Manning. The plan was for Osweiler to learn from Manning, but he spurned Denver’s offer last offseason and joined the Houston Texans.

If Elway gets Romo, he better ensure he has a long-term future plan behind the Cowboys star.
