Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett moving forward, learning from mistakes
Late in Monday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett decided to attempt a 64-yard field goal instead of allowing quarterback Russell Wilson to try to convert on fourth-and-five near midfield.
The decision backfield as Denver’s kick hooked left and the Broncos lost 17-16. The next day, Hackett admitted his mistake and said Denver “definitely should’ve gone for it.”
The fact that Hackett isn’t too proud to admit his mistake is positive, and it’s a sign that he’s capable of learning from his mistakes. The rookie coach is now moving forward and preparing for next week’s game against Houston Texans.
“I’ve already moved on forward,” Hackett said Tuesday. “We are already game planning. We have the next week coming up here, on a short week. So, we have to get rolling. It’s that simple. It’s the next game. There is 16 more games. This was the 17th game in my mind.”
Hackett’s pleased with what Denver’s offense got right on Monday. Wilson’s unit totaled 433 net yards of offense and if not for a pair of goal-line fumbles, the offense could have scored 14 more points.
“We did a lot of good things,” Hackett said. “I don’t want to take away from how we moved the ball. Those guys executed all that stuff almost to perfection. ‘Russ’ was great. The running back, the lines, they were all awesome. They were moving the ball day. We just have to finish [drives].”
This week, the Broncos will move on from — and ideally, learn from — their mistakes against the Seahawks.
