Broken records & major milestones: The top performances in Bucks County area sports
Rain. Wind. Earthquakes? Last week had it all, including plenty of cancellations and postponements. But for those athletes that braved the elements, there were plenty of standout performances. Check out the top performers in lacrosse, softball, baseball and volleyball.
Then, be sure to vote Boys Athlete of the Week and Girls Athlete of the Week polls, beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Top Performances in Girls Lacrosse:
Annalise Messina, Upper Moreland *Major Milestone*
The junior recorded a major milestone in Tuesday’s win over Archbishop Wood. Messina scored five goals in the game, including the 200th goal of her career. In addition, she contributed four assists, three caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Addison Geary, CB South *Major Milestone*
She scored six goals and assisted on two more in the Titans’ 14-6 win over Bensalem. But she did even more in her next game, scoring eight goals with three assists in a win against CB South. To close out the week, she scored nine goals, along with two assists in a win over New Hope-Solebury on Saturday, when the junior recorded her 100th career goal.
Katie Casale, CB West
Casale tallied five goals, three assists, one ground ball and caused one turnover in a big win against previously unbeaten Souderton.
Katie Pennekamp, Abington
Pennekamp scored seven goals and assisted on another in the Ghosts’ 17-7 win over Lower Moreland.
Kema Brown, Pennsbury
The Falcons’ goalie recorded 13 saves in a win against previously unbeaten CB West.
Avery Farina, Souderton
She netted five goals and had three assists in a win over Villa Joseph Marie.
Bella Schrandt, CB West
She scored five goals and assisted on three others to rally the Bucks to a 12-11 come-from-behind victory against Great Valley.
Kaya Mallon, CR South
The Golden Hawks’ goalie recorded 10 saves while allowing just a single goal in a win over Quakertown.
Gigi Ippoldo, Germantown Academy
She scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Patriots a 12-11 victory over Lawrenceville. Ippoldo also contributed four draw controls and three ground balls.
Lucia Smigiel, Germantown Academy
She led the Patriots with five goals, and assisted on the game-winner in OT, of the Patriots 12-11 win against Lawrenceville.
Top Performances in Boys Lacrosse:
Christopher Glover, Harry S. Truman *Record Alert*
The senior made history last Saturday, when he scored 11 goals, setting a team record for goals in a game. In addition, he had 12 ground balls and two assists in a 16-10 win over George School.
Dom Varacallo, CB East
The Patriots’ goalie recorded 14 saves in a victory against rival CB South.
Peyton Bannak, Souderton
He won 10-of-16 faceoffs and picked up six ground balls in a win over CR South.
Jaden Beach, Pennsbury
The Falcons’ goalie made 14 saves and held Neshaminy scoreless after the first quarter in an 8-2 win for the Doug Greenfield Cup.
Alex Jalboot, Quakertown
Jalboot led the Panthers with six goals and two assists in a win over William Tennent.
Cole Nitterour, Pennridge
Nitterour dominated the midfield, winning 13-of-15 faceoffs in a win against Neshaminy.
Alex Greenspan, CB West
Greenspan led the offense with four goals and three assists in a victory over Harry S. Truman.
Mason Borzio, Quakertown
The junior dished out five assists and scored three goals of his own in an 11-5 win over Truman.
Dan Curran, Lansdale Catholic
He scored four goals and scooped up eight ground balls in a victory over Conwell-Egan.
Jack Trymbiski, La Salle
He led the way with four goals in a win over Philadelphia Catholic League opponent Father Judge.
Girls Lacrosse: Pennsbury's Popovich went from girls' lacrosse novice to standout in a hurry
Top Performances in Softball:
Emily Davis, Harry S. Truman
Davis made a diving catch in center field in the bottom of the seventh, helping the Tigers secure a 9-7 win over Bensalem.
Peyton McClain, Bristol
The freshman had an impressive debut, going 4-for-5 with six RBIs in the Warriors’ wins over Morrisville and MaST Charter. The shortstop had three doubles, drew two walks and scored five runs over the two games.
Grace Boyle, Bristol
The sophomore had a perfect week at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three doubles, one triple and three RBIs in wins against Morrisville and MaST Charter. The Warriors’ catcher also scored five runs.
Cayleigh Januszka, Bristol
The freshman went 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBIs in a win over Morrisville.
Skyler Mahler, Harry S. Truman
The freshman backstop turned a key double play that ended a bases-loaded threat and helped secure the Tigers’ win over Bensalem.
Molly Sheehy, CR North
The senior catcher smashed a three-run, go-ahead home run to give CR North a 6-3 victory over Neshaminy. She also had a homer again against Conwell-Egan, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and a home run in the win.
Amariah McKnight, Conwell-Egan
She hit a two-run home run in a 12-9 loss to CR North.
Molly Milewski, Conwell-Egan
The senior had three hits, including a home run and a double, in a loss to CR North.
Ella Wheeler, CB South
Both of Wheeler’s two hits against North Penn were home runs, giving the center fielder three RBIs in a 10-5 loss to the defending state champs.
Karlye Teman, Palisades
The Pirates ace pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 while walking just one through seven innings, in a 6-0 win against Saucon Valley. At the plate, she had a pair of hits, including a triple.
Kaylee Brown, Upper Moreland
The catcher hit a grand slam in the Golden Bears’ win over Cheltenham.
Zoey Clark, Germantown Academy
Clark went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a win over Lawrenceville School.
Alex Johnson, Germantown Academy
She drove in four runs on two hits in the Patriots’ victory over Lawrenceville School.
Kayla Ripper, CR North
The sophomore was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, and she was equally impressive in right field, where she had six putouts in a win against Conwell-Egan.
Cara Waskiewicz, William Tennent
In the bottom of the sixth, Pickford scorched a go-ahead, three-run single into right field to give the Panthers a 4-3 win over Catholic League power Archbishop Wood.
Top Performances in Baseball:
Stone Powell, Neshaminy
Powell singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the game-winning run for the 3-2 walkoff win over CR North. Against Holy Ghost, he went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory.
Matt Gannon, La Salle
The senior was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a double and one RBI from the leadoff spot in a win over Haverford School. Against Lansdale Catholic, he went 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs in the 8-3 victory.
Nick Simons, Upper Moreland
Simons was solid through six innings on the mound, allowing just four hits and one run in a win against Springfield.
Kevin Schmidt, La Salle
The senior was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in a win over Lansdale Catholic.
Jack Pye, La Salle
The junior pitcher was locked in against defending PCL champion Father Judge, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out four in a complete-game effort. Pye earned the 4-2 win in a battle against last year’s Pitcher of the Year, David Rodriguez.
Keegan Johnson, Conwell-Egan
The sophomore was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in an 8-7 win against Devon Prep.
Cooper Natisin, Quakertown
Natisin earned the win on the mound, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out five through 5⅓ innings, and he also drove in all three of the Panthers’ runs in the 3-2 win over Hatboro-Horsham. He was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in a victory against Parkland.
Reed Curtier, Council Rock South
The sophomore pitcher gave up just one hit through six innings while striking out 11 to earn the 3-0 win against Pennsbury.
Billy O’Neill, Council Rock South
The junior was a perfect 4-for-4, which included two doubles and two RBIs, in an 11-8 win against rival CR North. He went 2-for-3 in a 3-0 win against Pennsbury.
Top Performances in Boys Volleyball:
Vraj Patel, Bensalem
He had 10 kills and three blocks in the Owls 3-1 win over CR South.
Dean Nguyen, CB West
Nguyen tallied 17 kills and 11 digs to help the Bucks top Souderton 3-1, and he had 11 kills and 10 digs in a win over North Penn.
Evan Jalosinski, Pennridge
He dished out 32 assists, along with nine digs, three blocks and three kills, in the Rams’ 3-1 win over CB South. Jalosinski had 24 assists, five digs and two kills in a sweep of CB East.
Sean Stewart, William Tennent
He had 12 kills and 11 digs in the Panthers sweep of Neshaminy.
