What is the team news?

Brighton

Brighton defender Bernardo has been ruled out of Saturday's clash.

The left-back picked up a hamstring injury in the top-flight clash with West Ham on January 2, with Gaetan Bong set to deputise.

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan and winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh remain unavailable as they are on international duty at the Asian Cup, while Jose Izquierdo continues to recover from a knee injury.

Provisional squad: Steele, Button, Montoya, Suttner, Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Burn, Balogun, Bong, Stephens, Kayal, Bissouma, Propper, Gross, March, Knockaert, Murray, Locadia, Andone.

Liverpool

Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip has a chance of being fit for the trip to Brighton after returning to training this week.

The German has missed the last six matches with a broken collarbone but his comeback is timely with Dejan Lovren ruled out for at least a fortnight with a hamstring problem.

Adam Lallana (muscle) and Joe Gomez (foot) are both still sidelined but Jordan Henderson is back in training after a calf problem kept him out of the FA Cup defeat at Wolves.

Provisional squad: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Mignolet, Camacho, Moreno, Milner, Henderson, Keita, Sturridge, Origi.

What are the current standings?

What are they saying?

Liverpool's James Milner after defeat to Man City:

"Back-to-back defeats isn't really good enough for us but you have blips in a season. It's not something you want, especially at Liverpool, we know what's expected. We have to make sure we bounce back and look at where we can get better.

"It's not about blips, they are expected, but it's how you respond and bounce back. You've seen the character in the squad over the last few years, and the players we have, to know we will bounce back. It's easier saying that but we have to do that at the weekend."

Jurgen Klopp on going out of the Cup:

"There's no advantage, we will see it. When does the Champions League start? In February? It's not even a month and then we talk again completely differently. It's just the situation.

"Other teams played more games, they are still in competitions, but they can deal with it, you can see it.

"We could deal with it as well with the right number of players, that's how it is, but that's all. There's no advantage, we have to use the time.

"I would love to still be in these competitions but we are not in. I know Pep (Guardiola) said already that he prefers to be in four competitions.

"Yeah, I would prefer the same. But we are not in, so we have to make the best of the time we have now and get as many points as possible.

"You have to use the time and really be week in, week out the best shape we can be, understand the job right, understand the challenge right, and go for it. That's our job, nothing else."

What are the best odds?

  • Brighton win 10/1

  • Draw 4/1

  • Liverpool win 2/7

What's our prediction?

Liverpool are on a run of two defeats in a row - one in the league and one in the FA Cup - but they should bounce back against Brighton, who have only posted one win in their last five Premier League games.
Predicted score: Brighton 1 Liverpool 4
