Brian Smith: Hamburg inducts three into its athletic Hall of Fame

Jan. 28—Hamburg recently inducted three new members into its athletic Hall of Fame: Shelley Reppert Fayewicz, Erin Caretti and Larry Werner.

Shelley Reppert Fayewicz: Fayewicz, a 2002 Hamburg grad, earned four varsity letters each in softball, basketball and track. She was a two-time All-Berks pick and an All-State selection in field hockey. As a senior, she was named a team captain, team MVP, the MVP in Berks II, the senior scholar athlete in Berks II and to the National Academic Squad. She played field hockey collegiately at Susquehanna University. She was the MAC Commonwealth co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman and a second-team all-conference pick as a sophomore. In her final two seasons, she was team MVP twice, a first-team all-conference selection as a junior and a second-team all-region pick and the school's Female Athlete of the Year as a senior. She was a four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association all-academic selection.

Erin Caretti: Caretti, a 1991 Hamburg grad, earned two varsity letters in basketball and four in football. He was an Inter-County first-team pick as a junior and senior. As a senior, he had a team-high 90 tackles, was named to the All-Berks team, and also was named Hamburg's Male Athlete of The Year. He played football collegiately at Colgate, earning four varsity letters. He won the 1994 Wearin' The Red Award, which is presented annually to the player who places Colgate football above himself. He has coached at Yeunguam University in Japan, Wyoming Seminary, Perkiomen Prep, Trinity Pawling Prep and is currently teaching at Mercersburg Academy.

Larry Werner: Werner, who began his career as a health and physical education teacher at Hamburg in 1963, was inducted in the Coach and Contributor category. He was the varsity boys basketball coach from 1963-75. He led the Hawks to two Berks title games, a District 3 final and was selected as the Berks Coach of The Year three times. He coached varsity baseball from 1963-73, leading the Hawks to the Berks title in 1969. He coached varsity girls basketball from 1977-91. He also was the boys varsity tennis coach for five seasons, a track and field coach for one season and a junior high baseball coach for 12 years. He also worked a Berks soccer official for 35 seasons.
