Brian Kelly addresses accent controversy shortly after he was hired

When Brian Kelly first arrived at LSU, he was all over the news, not because of his record as a head coach or his recruiting prowess, but for his southern accent.

Kelly was accused of trying to pull off a country accent now that he is in the bayou, an accent that is very different from his Boston roots. Kelly appeared on Barstool Sports’ Bussin with the Boys earlier this week to discuss exactly what happened with the accent.

To this day, Kelly still claims that he was not faking the accent.

“No, I mean, who would — that’s the stupidest thing to try to do,” Kelly responded, asked if he faked the accent. “Listen, when you have a Boston accent, I mean, and you’re in the Midwest, and you go down South, you’re going to be all messed up anyway.

“I think I have a bit of a strange accent anyway. So add another one, I think it’s crazy anyway.”

Evidently, Kelly is blaming the mix of accents he’s been dealing with throughout his life, coupled with the way LSU faithful says the word for skewing his language at the time of the incident.

“You listen to people, and you start hearing ‘Family’ — it’s almost like that’s natural,” added Kelly. “That’s how you say it. I’m just trying to be like everybody else.

“Then throw your Boston accent in there too, and heck, I couldn’t tell you what was coming out of my mouth.”

Now that Kelly has been in Baton Rouge for over a year, maybe his accent has acclimated to Cajun life.
