Brewers fans are in mourning after Corbin Burnes was traded to the Orioles. Many feel team was fleeced, frustrated with Mark Attanasio.
Milwaukee Brewers fans are feeling all sorts of emotions after the franchise traded former Cy Young Award pitcher and three-time All-Star Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday for two prospects and a draft pick.
This comes on the heels of the Brewers departing with workhorse and fellow All-Star Brandon Woodruff as well this offseason. They were a fearsome 1-2 punch for several years. Now, Brewers fans have just been delivered a gut punch, along with a heavy dose of frustration and sadness.
While Brewers general manager Matt Arnold says he doesn't view trading away their ace as a signal that they're in a rebuild phase, fans weren't buying it, even if it might have been expected to lose Burnes, a free agent after the 2024 season. They've seen this over and over and over again with the club unable to hold onto its top players ahead of their pending free agency.
Burnes, a homegrown player the Brewers drafted in 2016 who became one of the game's best starting pitchers over the last four seasons, joins an Orioles franchise with eyes on ending its 41-year World Series drought. They're coming off a 101-win season and an AL East championship. And even after giving up two top-100 prospects to the Brewers, they still have the top minor-league system in MLB.
So, did the Brewers get fleeced in not even getting one of the Orioles' top five prospects? What does the Burnes trade represent about the Brewers and owner Mark Attanasio as a whole? And could any more trades be coming? Here's how social media reacted to it all.
Who won the Corbin Burnes trade? Brewers or Orioles? It's pretty clear by these reactions.
The Orioles acquire former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes without moving any of their top 5 prospects 👀

Brewers got destroyed in that Corbin Burnes trade

Brewers got completely fleeced, yikes. https://t.co/3IfHQN65ml

Baltimore absolutely fleeced the Brewers bro https://t.co/T78Did0cjJ pic.twitter.com/L9W5hguWTz

Considering Baltimore has the best prospects in all of baseball and we couldn’t even get one of their top 10 prospects in return for the 2nd rated mlb sp in the game is very disappointing,

Brewers fans are frustrated to say the least, especially with Mark Attanasio
Interesting. Didn’t Matt Arnold say they didn’t plan to trade Burnes this offseason? I wonder if Adames is next. Attanasio doesn’t want to pay his best players but will use that money to invest elsewhere…after he blackmailed the taxpayers to pay more $ for the stadium. https://t.co/28OuSZGf7l

I'll tell you what really frustrates me...
How did the Brewers not even reach the World Series with the best starting rotation in franchise history, led by Burnes and Woodruff??
What a waste.— Joe Zenzola (@RadioJoeSports) February 2, 2024
Should the Brewers front office ever be forgiven for not attempting at all to stack their offense with a healthy and peak Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta in 2021?
Probably not.— John “BrewersRaptor” Egan (@BrewersRaptor) February 2, 2024
Im having Hader trade vibes all over again
— Dennis B. (@knowntome11) February 2, 2024
Why do I continue to be a fan of this team? I don't see them ever seriously contending if Mark Antanassio stays on as owner. We had one of the best pitchers in the #MLB and traded him away.

MA should sell the team so he can continue investing in other ventures

Morning After thoughts on the Corbin Burnes trade…
1.). Hurts 2024 Chances 👎
2.). Controllable talent for the next 6 years 👍
3.). Mark Attanasio MUST sell the team, especially if he’s investing in the PGA Tour and not willing to extend home grown players 🔥 🔥— FRESH IRC PODCAST (@SS_2FRESH) February 2, 2024
Meanwhile, let's get a live look at Baltimore Orioles fans this week, one that includes getting new ownership

Orioles acquired the 2021 Cy Young in Corbin Burnes, have the No. 1 overall MLB prospect in Jackson Holliday, and had the best AL record last year.
They also announced the 30-year lease extension for Camden Yards and John Angelos will sell the team.

We’ve waited so long. Been through so much losing and so many quiet offseasons. This week has been nothing short of miraculous.
Soak it in, Orioles fans.— Alex Fast (@AlexFast8) February 2, 2024
Brewers fans might need some time to process the Corbin Burnes trade before the 2024 season begins

This is tough. VERY tough. No Corbin, no Woodruff, no Houser. Who are they gonna have in the starting pitcher rotation - Freddy Peralta plus.... ????
Willy Adames better be staying. https://t.co/AdEZBpTjah— Maggie Sherwin 💖📚💄🎵 (@MaggieKayte) February 2, 2024

Life of a small market franchise for the Milwaukee Brewers
Being a Brewer fan is hard man. We love&support these players from the beginning, they work their way up until we can no longer afford them and ultimately get traded.
Never making a championship because always missing a few key pieces and the next year gutting the team— allie adames (@AllieKurowski) February 2, 2024
Sucks being a Brewers fan cuz you just know they gonna lose every good player they ever have. Contreras will be gone before we know it https://t.co/IummMdF6YM

Brewers fans looking for a silver lining
Brewers fans assuming the Brewers were going “all in” is confusing to me. It would’ve been a complete departure from how they’ve been doing things.
I understand why fans don’t love it. Personally, this is how I believe a team in the Brewers shoes should operate, and I enjoy it.— Spencer Michaelis (@smichaelis234) February 2, 2024
This #Brewers offseason was/is so damn weird, but it could look amazing with hindsight.
If they don't get a deal for Adames done, Chourio becomes an MVP-caliber talent in three years, Joey Ortiz becomes the next starting shortstop, and DL Hall is a 2nd/3rd starter, this rocks.— Kedrick Stumbris (@KedrickStumbris) February 2, 2024
The replies from #Brewers fans make me know that Milwaukee totally won this trade. https://t.co/YlDhhfbtEy

Never a dull moment in Wisconsin sports
The last calendar year for Wisconsin sports fans:
- Packers trade 4x MVP Aaron Rodgers
- Bucks fire Mike Budenholzer
- Craig Counsell heads to the Cubs to manage
- Bucks trade for Damian Lillard
- Bucks fire Adrian Griffin & hire Doc Rivers
- Brewers trade Corbin Burnes

Could Willy Adames, a free agent after the 2024 season, be traded next?
Let’s poll the audience, speak now or forever hold your peace, etc.
