Brevard preseason roundup: Aug. 17-18 HS football results

MELBOURNE — Eau Gallie used big plays to run past visiting Titusville 31-0 on Friday during a preseason high school football game.

They included a 90-yard kickoff return for touchdown by Tay Welch to start the game and two interceptions returned for touchdowns, one by Brandon Brown and one by Xavier Lherisse, who also intercepted another pass.

"When you have a pass rush and you have secondary guys that can cover, you're gonna give yourself a chance," Commodores coach Chris Sands said. "Those big plays are going to happen. We did the same thing in the spring game. We've got guys that can play, not just on the back end but up front rushing the passer."

The Commodores open the regular season Aug. 25 at Springstead in Spring Hill, north of Tampa, while the Terriers host Melbourne.

Melbourne 28, Lake Brantley 21

MELBOURNE — The Bulldogs' game-winning touchdown came after Jordan Pidala threw a short pass to Deuce Ingram, who then pitched the ball to Jaylen Daley to run down the sideline and score Melbourne's fourth and final touchdown of the game with 7:09 left.

"It feels great. I mean, our team has been doubted for a long time, and we are just ready to win," Ingram said after the game.

Lake Brantley got on the board in the first quarter when quarterback Parker Perales ran in a 60-yard touchdown.

Melbourne tied the game with 6:47 in the first quarter when Pidala threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ingram and Brady Clarke made the extra point.

The Bulldogs went into halftime with a 14-13 lead after Keoni Collins recovered a fumble and returned it for a score. Pidala threw his second touchdown pass of the night to Jack Casey with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Melbourne will travel to Titusville for the first game of the regular season on Aug. 25.

Carrollwood Day 38, Rockledge 6

Michigan State commit Anthony Carrie scored on two touchdown runs and the Raiders fell at McLarty Stadium. Jaylen Heyward scored the only touchdown for Rockledge.

The Raiders play at Sanford Seminole to open the regular season.

Heritage 22, Jensen Beach 2

The Panthers went south and brought back a convincing preseason victory. Heritage plays at Satellite next.

East River 27, Astronaut 15

The War Eagles were within two points at the end of the third quarter but did not score again on the road. MCC visits Astronaut next week.

Cocoa Beach 28, Orangewood Christian 7

The Minutemen got the preseason victory and visit Holy Trinity in Week 1 of the regular season.

John Carroll 27, Holy Trinity 6

The Tigers scored on two field goals in their preseason home game and open the regular season on Friday.

Port Orange Atlantic 21, MCC 20

Quarterback Joseph Allen scored on a 1-yard keeper in the fourth quarter, but a 2-point conversion attempt failed and the Hustlers fell in Melbourne.

MCC also scored on an Allen pass of 24 yards to DayDay Farmer and an 82-yard kickoff return.

Merritt Island, Viera at New Smyrna Beach jamboree

Viera defeated Seabreeze in the first two quarters of the jamboree, 27-6. The Hawks later beat Merritt Island, 41-28.

Next week, Deltona will visit Merritt Island and Viera plays at South Fork.

Merritt Island Christian 21, Old Plank Christian 8

The Cougars won their Sunshine State Athletic Conference opener for 2023.

Winter Springs 21, Space Coast 0

The Vipers fell on the road and open the regular season against Lake Howell.

Thursday's results

COCOA — The Satellite High defense put up a fight but ran into too much Cocoa football offense on Thursday, and the Tigers rolled to a 51-0 preseason win.

Cocoa will visit Orlando Jones next Friday to open the 2023 regular season, while the Scorps host Heritage.

Sophomore quarterback Brady Hart made his debut for the Tigers, who won the FHSAA Class 2S championship last year.

Cocoa didn't score until 2:34 of the first quarter. Satellite stopped the Tigers on their opening drive in the red zone but couldn't make much progress with its own offense.

"Always, in first games, stupid things happen, and we had some stupid mistakes, especially early on," Cocoa coach Ryan Schneider said, "but we'll work through that, and we'll be fine."

Hart hit Jayvaan Boggs for a 24-yard touchdown play in the final minute of the quarter to make it 14-0, and he connected with C.J. Bragg for a 65-yarder at 9:48 of the second quarter.

Cocoa led at halftime, 38-0, and scored twice as the second half was played with a running clock.

Bayside 14, Sebastian River 7

PALM BAY — Bayside picked up the home preseason win over the Sharks.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Bears were down by seven until Kaiden Brabham connected with David Francis on a 1-yard pass, Caden Fritzson made the extra point to tie the game.

Francis scored what went on to be the game-winning touchdown on a 45-yard run with four minutes left in the game.

This was the first win for the Bears under new head coach Billy Miller. Bayside will host Palm Bay next Friday to kick off the regular season.
