Boys soccer: Carrollwood Day denies St. Joseph in FHSAA semifinal

For the St. Joseph Flashes, Carrollwood Day turned off the lights on a season to remember.

The top-seeded Tampa school scored once before halftime and two more late to end St. Joseph's boys soccer season 3-0 in Tuesday night's physical Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2A semifinal.

Finishing with a rare 11-on-8 advantage after officials sent off three Flashes in the closing minutes, Carrollwood Day (17-2-1) advances to a Friday night championship game against Orangewood Christian from Maitland, set for Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.

St. Joseph (9-9-1) held off the Patriots for nearly 20 minutes until Carrollwood Day broke through just before the water break. A free kick from the center circle dipped into the box, where Cash Coppins launched a looping header past Flashes goalkeeper Ben Boege.

Boege helped keep the Flashes in the contest with numerous saves, before Carrollwood Day struck twice in the waning minutes as St. Joseph pushed more players upfield.

Juan Garanton put away an inaccurate St. Joseph clearance in the 70th minute for the visitors' second goal and Carrollwood wrapped it up on a flurry in the box in the 74th minute when Jacob Zager poked home a rebound.

St. Joseph also reached the final four in 2022, losing on that occasion to Pine.
