Boys basketball roundup: Litchfield Dragons fall to host St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders, 76-75

Dec. 28—ST. CLOUD — St. Cloud Cathedral snuck past Litchfield on Day 2 of the Crusader Christmas Classic at St. Cloud Cathedral.

The host Crusaders knocked off the Dragons on Thursday, 76-75.

Jack McCann paced the Dragons with 25 points. Tucker Liestman added 23 points and six rebounds.

Litchfield concludes play in the Crusader Christmas Classic against Concordia Academy at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Cloud Cathedral.

Brayson Boike, Gunner Liebl and Drew Hjelmeland paced Dawson-Boyd in its victory over Hayfield at Rushford-Peterson High School in Rushford.

Boike, a junior forward, led with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Liebl had 18 points and team-highs of four steals and three assists. Hjelmeland tacked on 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Dawson-Boyd concludes play in the Rushford-Peterson Holiday Invite against Rushford-Peterson at 11 a.m. Friday.

Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted cruised past Minnewaska at Howard Lake.

"We played a great game offensively, but gave up way too many layups and second-chance points defensively," Minnewaska head coach Zach Traphagen said. "Howard lake is a nice team and they played well, but we can never be OK with giving up 88 points in a game.

"(The) guys played with pretty good energy tonight," Traphagen said. "But at the end of the day, we need to defend and rebound much better if we're going to win games."

Minnewaska either plays in the third-place game at 4 p.m. or the championship game at 7 p.m. Friday at Howard Lake.

Senior forward DeAndre Holloway surpassed 1,000 career points in a Fighting Saints' uniform as the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg boys basketball team defeated host Windom to win the Windom Tournament title.

The Fighting Saints, who are 5-2 this season, play host to New London-Spicer at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kerkhoven.

Paynesville took fourth place in the Grand8 Holiday Classic in Perham after a loss to Perham in the third-place game.

The Bulldogs (5-4) go to Holdingford at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Drew Almich's double-double propelled Yellow Medicine East to its first win of the season against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart at Hector.

Almich, a senior forward, had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Sting.

YME goes to 1-8 on the season. The Mustangs drop to 1-6.

YME next goes to Clara City to play MACCRAY at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

Lac qui Parle Valley fell short against Milbank at Milbank, South Dakota.

The Eagles (3-6) take on Canby at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at Madison.
