Bowie boys golf team notches third at UIL state tournament

AUSTTIN — A strong first round put Bowie in contention for the Class 3A state boys golf title.

Even though the Jackrabbits couldn’t quite replicate their opening 308, they still left Grey Rock Golf Course this week with some hardware, finishing third in the state with a two-round total of 650.

Region I-3A asserted its dominance as Lubbock-Cooper Liberty won the 3A boys title with a 308-309—617, while Brock was second with a 320-322—642. Gunter and Diboll were Bowie’s biggest challengers for the bronze, totaling 668s.

Cy Egenbacher led Bowie with an 80-79—159 that tied him for 16th place. Andrew Sandhoff also improved his first-day total with an 81-79-160. The Jackrabbits’ other state representatives were Rayder Mann (79-86—165), Zac Harris (76-90—166) and Hunter Lea (83-92—175).

Liberty’s Reed Blacklock edged Orangefield’s Lincoln Parks by one stroke for the 3A individual title, posting a 69-74—143.

In other area state golf action, Olney’s Caleb Johnson tied for 21st with a 79-82—161 in the Class 2A Tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course.
