Boomers look to break through in district opener

Sep. 22—For teams in almost every class, week 4 of high school football is the start of the district schedule.

The exception is Class B where district matchups are still a couple of weeks away.

The Woodward Boomers head to southwest Oklahoma for a District 4A-1 contest against Cache on Friday.

Both teams have struggled in the early going. The Boomers are 0-3 and looking to turn things around. Cache is 1-2 with the lone win over Altus. Both played difficult non-district opponents. The Boomers non-district foes went a combined 8-1 while both Cache losses were to highly regarded teams in Tuttle and Elgin.

A week ago the Boomers lost to Newcastle 69-7 and Cache fell to Elgin 55-7.

Cache won last season's matchup at Boomer Stadium.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Other 4A-1 games this week have Chickasha at Weatherford and John Marshall at Clinton. Elk City is open this week.

The area schedule includes: Alex at Laverne, Buffalo at Tyrone, Cherokee at Seiling, Mooreland at Merritt (Thursday), Sharon-Mutual at Medford, Boise City at Waynoka, Shattuck at Central Marlow (Thursday), Fairview at Hooker, Millwood at Alva, Balko-Forgan at Kremlin-Hillsdale, Texhoma at Burns Flat-Dill City, Beaver at Okeene, Ringwood at Canton and Crescent at Watonga.

Game time everywhere is 7 p.m.

Mooreland, District A-1, will try and break into the win column against a Merritt team that is 1-2. The featured game in A-1 has Fairview taking its 18-game winning streak to the panhandle against the Hooker Bulldogs who are 2-1.

Fairview is ranked No. 1 in Class A while Hooker is ranked as high as fifth in some polls.

Also in A-1, Texhoma visits Burns Flat-Dill City and Sayre is at Thomas.

District play also starts in C-1 and Sharon-Mutual puts a 3-0 record on the line with a visit to Medford. Sharon-Mutual has moved into the rankings in several Class C polls this week. Medford is 1-2.

In preseason Timberlake and Waynoka were the district favorites. Timberlake travels to DCLA this week while Waynoka hosts Boise City. Waynoka has dropped two straight. Both teams have a win over Balko-Forgan. Buffalo is at Tyrone in the other C-1 game.

In Class B, top-ranked Seiling hosts Cherokee team that has lost two straight. Laverne, ranked as high as third, will host Alex, a team off to an 0-3 start. Shattuck, 3-0, is also on the road at Central Marlow, which is 1-3. Turpin, off to a 3-0 start, is idle this week.
